Clough Confirms Keane Talks
Clough Confirms Keane Talks
Saturday, 9th Jan 2010 09:08

Derby County manager Nigel Clough has confirmed that Blues boss Roy Keane has been in contact and that defender Jay McEveley’s name was one of those mentioned. Keane, who played alongside Clough at Nottingham Forest, says he has made one or two enquiries with the transfer window opening last Monday.

McEveley, who previously spent time on loan with the Blues in 2005/06 and is out of contract next summer, was linked with a return to Portman Road on Friday. Previously, his Rams team-mate Rob Hulse was also reported to be a Town target.

Clough says Keane has been in touch on a number of occasions: "I have spoken to Roy a couple of times about a few players, some of ours and some of his. Jay was one of the names mentioned but we've heard nothing since then.

"Jay has got six months left on his contract, so he is free to talk to anyone about a move if he wants to.

"We held preliminary talks about a new contract with his agent but they have been put on hold for the time being."

Derby confirmed their interest in Town striker Jon Stead in October, although given his recent goalscoring run it's unlikely that the Blues would sell the 26-year-old, who spent time on loan at Pride Park in 2006/07.

Town manager Keane has confirmed that he has been in touch with clubs about a couple of potential targets: “I have made one or two enquiries as you would expect at this time of year.”

There are a couple decent players in that squad McEveley is not one of those though. Green isn't a bad player but a midfielder is not a position we are short in

I'd take Mckeveley. Their fans rate him and he's been near on ever present. Young players do improve and he's the type of get stuck in pro you need at this level. Look how Stoke got out of the league, with no nonsence defenders.

Yer Keane, we should be after Evra or someone higher!

If Ashley Cole is not available we could settle for Evra

I'd take hulse. not McEveley although I think RK is looking to have 2 or 3 players for each position so imagine JM would be a squad player rather than ever-present..

Neither. Surprised Keane is looking at Mceveley. I thought he really rated Rosenior so would be looking at a left back in that mould. Mceveley did less than impress last time round and definitely no to Hulse.

Disappointing transfer tattle all round.

This may sound like a TOTAL stab in the Dark, but why can't we make enquiries about out of favour Tottenham striker Robbie Keane and get him up here on a couple months loan? He isn't getting too many competitive games where he is and I am sure that he and Keane Senior would get along just fine!

Love the fantasy football stuff - Robbie Keane for ITFC!!!!!!

Can people not remember last time he was here. He was useless. Also I still dont think it is right for managers to give other managers' transfer targets to the press (he could easily have just said "we have had some interest in McEveley").

From BBC Sport

Tottenham boss Harry Redknapp says striker Robbie Keane will only leave White Hart Lane if someone offers £50m for him. Aston Villa and Celtic are interested in the 29-year-old Republic of Ireland forward.

not being funning but mcevely was ok when he was on loan....and we wanted him permently.
he is better now aswell having been a frequent championship player and he is much better than thatcher who we dont even want playing so of course we should be interested in mcevely for a position where we allready have one player playing well (david wright) we dont need to look for any1 better than mcevely and there arent really many better options anyway....

Please no McThuggery back. Among the worst footballers I've ever seen pull on the blue and white. If we want a talentless hooligan to play in defence, why not scout the nearest prison footy team?

Keneo you either sign crap or good players! this would be firmly in the first category!

McEveley is too similar to Delaney but not as good. I'd be surprised if we got him. He is not the quickest and is not as good of a defender as Wrighty but he does have a better left foot

Why doesn't Keane ask Mr Wenger nicely if we can take Carlos Vella on loan? It's not as if he is a guaranteed starter at Arsenal having only made 4 starts & 8 sub appearances in all competitions this season. Imagine getting him and Dos Santos on loan!!

I wonder if RK has asked about Kris Commons, he would be a great signing for left midfield.................

If we are getting anyone from Derby my choice would be Kris Commons for the left hand side ,good energy ,creates and scores ?

The only player from the derby squad i would take would be Kris Commons, i wouldnt even take Rob Hulse, the rest of there teem are average and not what we are looking to bring in. COME ON KEANO!

Is Mcevely still disabled?

Bergholtblue added 14:44 - Jan 9
Kris Commons is the only decent player Derby have, I can't see them letting him go. Other than him I do not know why anyone would need to talk to Nigel Clough other that to see if he had a nice Xmas and to wish him happy new year.

If we are going to rebuild a team of ex's why not bid for Stephen Bywater as well?

Keane clearly wants an actual left back in the squad (there currently isn't one assuming you don't count Thatcher, who clearly isn't in RK's plans) and McEvely would be a cheap option. Personally, I think trying to get Hreidarsson would be a better option. Much better player and may be available for free (or a small fee).

Keane seems to want a target man and Hulse would fit that bill, but not for the £2.5m mentioned in the papers. There are better players available for that sort of money (or less). Patrick Agyemang from QPR might be worth a look and Ishmael Miller from West Brom is fit again and may be available?

Neither good enough IMO. Yet Clough and Keane are friends so I suspect they chat on a number of occasions about all typesof players.
