Bruce Willing to Talk About Permanent Deals for Sunderland Pair
Bruce Willing to Talk About Permanent Deals for Sunderland Pair
Friday, 12th Mar 2010 15:26

Sunderland boss Steve Bruce says he would talk to Town about Daryl Murphy and David Healy joining the Blues permanently in the summer. The duo are currently on loan at Portman Road until the end of the season.

Bruce said: “Both Daryl and David seem happy with Ipswich. If Ipswich are happy with them we'll sit down and see if we can sort out something agreeable to all parties.”

Settling the terms of the duo’s current Premier League contracts is likely to be the main stumbling block with their current earnings probably close to double the highest wage at Portman Road, understood to be in the region of £12,000-a-week. Healy has another year left on his Black Cats deal, while Murphy’s contract is up in the summer of 2012.

Bruce is well aware that wages are the problem when players move out of the Premier League: “There's a big difference when dropping down to the Championship.

“This is reflected in wages and can be a barrier to stop a lot of players moving down.”

The former Manchester United defender says the duo would be unlikely to feature too often if they were to return to the Stadium of Light: “Both Daryl and David have been regular members of my squad, but realistically to be fair to them it is time to move on. Their chances at Sunderland are limited.

“They both have lots of good qualities, but I have Darren Bent and Kenwyne Jones as my first choice strikers with Frazier Campbell next in line followed by my January signing Benjani.”

Murphy has scored five goals in eight starts since joining the Blues, while Healy has netted once in four starts and three sub appearances.

Sunderland are likely to be unwilling to allow midfielder Jack Colback to move on a permanent basis. The 20-year-old is also on loan at Portman Road until the end of the season.

Sign them up. We need a gelled squad for next season and consistant team selection. The teams that are up there in the have played together and have a good team bond. This was eveident when we had our runs at the play-off and eventual promotion.

Murphy would be a great buy, Healy needs to improve more first.

I think we should move to sign both of these, Murphy has already proved what he can do & I believe Healy will do a job for us when he gets more match fit. Let Priskin go, Stead go, Counago go, buy chopra....... sorted!!

We should at least try to sign colback, hes a young lad with lots of talent, but could understand Brucie not being keen to let him go.

I'd be happy with Murphy done a good job so far and in theory he's not fully match fit. But I think in the summer we need to be stepping up and Healy is not the answer. In my opinion he's worse than Pablo and I suspect Pablo may be going in the summer so i really hope he doesn't take Healy on.

I hear there's an exciting youngster in League 1, someone called Rhodes or something. He'd be perfect ;-)

Murphy should be classed as a definite purchase, and Healy will do a job when he is fully fit so both should be signed up. As for Rhodes GET OVER IT do you really think that Town will seriously be interested in taking him back after selling him in the summer?, he wasn't good enough then and isn't now, He has only scored 3 goals in the last 14 games for Huddersfield in LEAGUE ONE which is a poor record suggesting that his bubble has burst.

Rhodes has slowed considerably on the scoring front. lisbie has nearly as many , or scertainly similar on matches played which tells it all really.
Healy doesnt look good enough. Cant understand how he was constantly on sunderland bench when unfit ! we are paying sunderland to get him fit , maybe not his full wages but a chunk im sure,

colback is the one to buy if we can . He just gets better and better .I wouldnt mind murphy though aswell. Just hope sunderland will pay off most of his contract thats left to get shot of him . If they sell him and get a fee and write off 12 of his 24k ? wages then we can afford him and sunderland dont pay a reserve for another 2 years. Who hands out these stupid long contacts in the first place ? i don t think it was keane who did extend murphys but he sure did give martin 4 years !!

No mention of Colback then... Hmmm, Jack and Daryl would be the two to choose for me if we could

Three years for Murphy, one or two for Healy and that would do fine. if we can let Stead go, and possibly Pablo, the wages will be a bit higher than now (assuming Priskin comes back), but we'll be rocking. Healy will come good. He'll certainly score no fewer goals than Pablo and looks like a general nuisance around the penalty area.

Right I know everyone jumped on the badwagon with Rhodes and he had a great scoring record for the reserves but why are people still banging on about him? We don't need to buy a league one striker (not unless it is Jermaine Beckford) I think Chpora would be a good buy. Keane got the best out of him at Sunderland and he is proven at this level and Premiership level. Stead can go, Pabs (unfortunately) can go.

Didn't anyone spot the ;-) in my post.

Of course I don't think we'll get Rhodes back and nor do I think we'll even try. I'm not an idiot.

I do however think it was a mistake and I do struggle to get over it.

on this topic though do people really think that Murphy, Healy and Priskin next year will be a decent strike force? I don't.

It'll be sad to see Pablo go, but I think it'll happen and to the one who said Healy will score more/as many. Well yes, but that's not the point. You only had to see Pablo on Tuesday to see what he brings to the team. He was a real nuisance when he came on and created far more in 10mins than Healy had all game. They're not the same type of player, which is OK if Healy was looking like scoring. But he isn't.

Anyway, I suspect Priskin will come back, Stead and Pablo will go. I'd like to see us keep Murphy (and to those who seriously think Sunderland will sell Colback. No chance! He's obviously a talent and Sunderland are using us to give him games) and so I think we need to sign one other. No idea who though.

brockley shows what you know, Beckford is the bigest flop he's to near late 20's, and to much of an 'I am' for us. Chpora has spells where he goes months without scoring to often. Healy I'am afriad has proved at enough clubs he cant score enough, its not just a fitness thing. Murphy's the one! still need a quality poacher!

To brockley: thing is, buying a proven Championship striker costs money - you only have to see how much we paid for Priskin (who wasn't proven and came from a cash-strapped club) to see that. We'd be talking £3m or more and whilst that may be a go-er it may not.

Hence we need to look to lower divisions. After all David Johnson came from League 1 and seemed to do OK. It can happen.

Sometimes having a manager with vision helps...

Oh, and Chopra was seen as a massive flop at Sunderland, which is why he ended up back at Cardiff so not sure what 'getting the best out of him' means.

To those saying that Rhodes obviously isn't good enough because he's going through a bit of a drought. Pur-lease. Like no other striker has ever done that before have they? He's still young. Maybe he's tired. Anyway keep bringing that up again, sorry. I only mention it to mention that Chopra does the same and Healy has never really been successful at club level so why is everyone so sure he'll do it here?

Colback will be going back to the premier league where he belongs

Interesting but way too premature. My guess is that much of who comes in and who goes out will depend entirely on what division we are playing in next year! Steve Bruce is sowing seeds and fanning flames. Let's secure Championship status and once that is in the bag (not a certainty by any means), then the planning for next season can start.

Wouldn't mind us having a go at signing Peter Whittingham from Cardiff..be perfect on the left of midfield - or maybe we should give Ambrose another go?
Cardiff and Palace are both desperate for cash - shouldn't take that much of an offer for either?

From what I have seen of both players this season it would be brilliant to sign Murphy.

I dont rate Healy.. I would rather keep Counago. Everyone is saying that he isnt match fit etc but its not just his fitness but also his ATITUDE. On the pitch he doesnt seem as interested as he should.

Also, iv noticed that no one is mentioning Connor Wickham as part of our strike force for next season.

Murphy, Wickham, Chopra and someone new.... Not bad at all!!

Civelli will be back and hopefully that will ease the pain from losing Colback.

It is pretty early to talk about this but oh well!!!

COYB!!!!!!!!!!!!

I'd say get them both Roy! They are good players who can make the difference next season. Healy is great! He just needs some more fittness. Only I am quite sceptic that they will agree to toe wages cut. Yes - they both talk how good they feel at PR but that is because they are on loan only. We all know what happens when we try to sign somebody from the Premier league. So if we can get them I would be exstatic. Also to get Chopra is a great idea bu I am not so sure Roy will thave that big kitty for new players... But if we can't get Chopra we can stick with Stead and offload Pablo and Priskin:))

What a surprise Murphy has been, bearing in mind that nobody on here wanted him.

Yallop added 18:04 - Mar 12
Especially when the people on here are such good scouts and know so much about other teams players.

Osborne, I agree with you there. I for one wasn't too bothered about Murphy, but having said that always willing to give new players a chance, he's been awesome up front, scoring regularly. Five goals in eight games translates to well over the twenty a season mark that we all seem to be craving for, so if he can keep it up next year(assuming we do sign him and I hope we do) he will be that prolific striker we've been missing these past few seasons. Would be happy to see Healy signed permanently but he's a 30 year old with a considerable lack of first team football in recent seasons so will take him a while to get going!

at this moment in time i wud rather have someone else than Healy next season. His contribution so far wudnt justify his wages!!

No interest in keeping healy . Many many years ago he scored a few for PNE and then a big nothing. Ok he has got a few for NI but so has priskin for hungary.
Im not a fan of pablo but would rather keep him and play him with murphy than healy.
Stead and priskin can go. Chopra hasnt done too much against us luckily when we have played cardiff and does go through long spells without scoring but still a good player even if he assaulted Owen ! We need a poacher -still -and the 35 year old Phillips would be the man and avbout the only one we may be able to attract because of his age and he isnt a Brum regular. After him , who could we go for. League players are a gamble buyt maybe charlie austin at swindon would be worth a punt as he is young and had only a season as a pro but looks interesting.
