Bolton Premier League Side Chasing McAuley
Bolton Premier League Side Chasing McAuley
Wednesday, 12th May 2010 14:22

Bolton Wanderers have emerged as the Premier League club chasing Town central defender Gareth McAuley. Yesterday, TWTD revealed that an unnamed top flight side had joined SPL champions Rangers in targeting the 30-year-old Northern Ireland international.

McAuley, reportedly rated at around the £2 million mark, was named Town’s Player of the Year this season after a shaky start to the campaign, forming a central defensive partnership with Damien Delaney in the latter months.

The Blues would be unlikely to resist a significant bid for their ex-skipper with boss Roy Keane appearing pleased but never entirely satisfied with his central defensive pairing.

Bolton are looking for central defensive additions with Gary Cahill expected to join one of the Premier League's bigger guns in the close season.

McAuley, who is contracted to the Blues until June 2011, joined Town from Leicester City in 2008 for £1.1 million, having previously been with Lincoln City.

Elsewhere, former loanee Liam Rosenior has been banned from driving for six months, fined £2,500 and ordered to pay costs of £85, having pleaded guilty to using a motor vehicle without third party insurance and driving a motor vehicle otherwise than in accordance with a licence earlier this week.

Really? We can find better can we? He just won player of the season and was the best player in our improved defence. We desperately need to solidify the defence, but we've already lost D Wright, now McAuley is linked with prem clubs - which means he could well go.

This is not good news at all.

This blase attitude about getting better players (similar comments were made when D Wright was let go) is crazy. After all, if Prem clubs want McAuley, how are you so sure we can get a better player to play for mid-table Championship team?

I hope this is paper talk, because we need to keep hold of mcAuley.

Surely it is better to stick with someone we know rather than take a punt on an unknown quantity? Expecially as he is one of our better players. Anyway who are all these other players who are better than him, cheaper and available?

naa, your spot on, this is getting silly, if we are serious about promotion we have to retain our best players, & then build a squad around them.

IMO: Murphy, Mcauley, Delaney, O'Connor, Leadbitter, Norris, Walters, Wickham: should be held onto at all costs, Why on earth do you think these type of players are getting interest from Prem clubs?.... Cause they can see the quality!!

People have to realise that an average Championship club are going to struggle to attract top quality players, they will always have better options. Some fans think if we sell: Walters, Wickham, Mcauley, we are suddenly going to be able to bring in: Rooney, Drogba, & Terry as replacements!! Get real folks!! Lets tell those interested in our top players to "get lost" we don't need to sell anymore, so shouldn't be forced into accepting pathetic offers!

I would deffinitely take 2 mill +

fair enough he won player of the season but that does not make him Rio ferdinand....lol he won ITFC player of the season not the championship player of the season and our "improved defense" had alot to do with some hardworking midfielders not just McAuley and Delaney

£2million would be an acceptable price to let him go for at age 30 and it is very reasonable to expect we can replace him with that amount Bolton are not the all knwing messiahs on how good a player is and he is probably one of 20 options they will look at of varying ability and value
I remember Newcastle paying millions for an Ipswich CB who was suposidly really good....he didn't turn out so good for them.

Mark Beevers from Shefield Wednesday would be a very good buy Tottenham were after him in the summer dont know if they still would be i think he has 2 years left on his contract

I agree Suffolk n Good except possibly Walter 2 indifferent seasons at his best great but £4 million as mentioned got to take that hold on to other player and we can get better for that price

I think people forget just how bad we were at the start of the season in defence. Sure, McA improved, but it couldn't get much worse.

RK has always said any player is available for sale - IF (and this is all still speculation) a bid of £2m came in for him, then RK will have to look long and hard at that offer - Evans will not offer him a unlimited supply of funds and RK has to trim both the squad and I suspect wages as well.

Especially if his aim is to bring in 5 or 6 players - he's already stated that there are players that he doesn't want at the club who are under contract and if no one comes in we can't offload - so sometimes it's a case of letting players go who you might not want to but maybe have to.

The only way I'd want to accept this is if they gave us 2 Million plus Danny Shittu!

Get real. Some on here have a very blinkered view of professional footballers. At the end of the day no player has any loyalty to his club. If an offer came in which the club found acceptable and the player wants to go - and lets be honest the thought of playing in the premiership is a very big carrot then McAuley will want to go - then McAuley would be on his way. He would increase his salary plus a good slice of the transfer fee

Who wouldnt want to take that sort of deal and that sort of opportunity

Saying that he is good but most certainly not premiership ability!

Agree with naa and bleedblue! We maight be able to find better but we don't want to concentrate on building something that we already built last season. We have enough problematic areas to cover and to work on during this pre-season to make our job even more difficult. And another thing - we want now to build on the spine we have created not to build a new spine. This will lead us to another "jelling" season in the mid table. And we don't want this do we?

GeorgiDoundarov added 15:43 - May 12
... forgot to add - Bruce isn't even half as good as McAuley is. Bruce is not a Premiership player whereas McAuley could be!

surely he is one of the key players we should be building the team around . We found a good central defensive partnership , why break it up - to take a punt on someone else ( if they even wanted to come here ! ) is asking for another season of uncertainty .

Walters is a different case - if we got anything over £2m offered for him we should jump at it

Markie31 added 15:58 - May 12
we'll need him when we get into the Prem next season ;)

barnesey added 15:59 - May 12
Anybody any good will be desperate to get away from Keane and his toadie followers and we'll have a team made up of the ones nobody else wants.

And nobody at the club cares a toss!

Seasider added 16:10 - May 12
If Bluenight 85 is referring to Titus Bramble, would point out that he has played regularly in Prem ever since leaving us.
Mustn't forget we have 8 players coming back from loan plus another couple Quinny and Luciano Civelli,so must get rid of most of these if anybody will have them as RK is bringing in even more.
Seems he has no idea who his best players are most of time as always chopping and changing;but feel that Walters is dispensable at £4m approx as 90 minute men are easy to find, however not Connor who has hardly started in the game or Gareth Mc Auley who has struck up a good partership with Damien Delaney in spine of team.

Blueknight85 added 16:23 - May 12
Yes Seasider i was referring to Bramble who has only had a half decent premier career since joining Wigan. He was awful at Newcastle dubbed the worst defender ever and as such any mistake by any player in football became known as a Titus Brambes (Shambles) in the style of rhyming slang
The point made was that Premier league teams are not always correct when buying players.

essential to keep hold of: murphy/ALB mcauley delaney o'connor leadbitter garvan norris (needs to stop being so rash though) walters doesnt seem to do much IMO other than run around but i bet if we got rid we would look bare....and wickham...buy a striker left mid and a (w)right back....see how the left back position goes in pre-season because we hae o'connor and peters who i think can do a job.

Surely the key is to make sure that we have a replacement signed up before we sell. One of the biggest mistakes last year was selling players before finding replacements. IF we can find someone who might do a better job THEN we might sell but needs to be in that order.
