Bruce Set for Sheffield United Switch
Bruce Set for Sheffield United Switch
Monday, 19th Jul 2010 16:10

TWTD understands that Town have accepted a bid from Sheffield United for defender Alex Bruce. The 25-year-old is likely to complete his move to Bramall Lane in the next few days with the fee probably in the region of £200,000.

Bruce was amongst the eight available players whose names have been circulated to other clubs.

The 25-year-old, who has a year left on his Town contract, spent the second half of last season on loan at Leicester. A permanent move to the Foxes fell down after manager Nigel Pearson moved on to Hull City.

The switch is likely to see manager Roy Keane move into the transfer market for an additional central defender with Damien Delaney out for three months with his thigh injury. Gareth McAuley and Tommy Smith are likely to be the club’s first choice defenders with the only cover youngsters Troy Brown and Tom Eastman.

Best of luck for the future Bruce but you are simply not good enough to be a first team regular.

surely keano needs to get a good solid replacment because i cant see tommy smith, tom eastman or troy brown stepping up and doing a good enough job

Thank God for that.

Let's hope RK has some replacements in mind as were a bit thin on the ground for CBs.

I agree kezza, they are not good enough either.

smith did ok in the WC but only ok, nothing special . had a habit of backing off to much when attackers moved forward and turned his back on the ball numerous times. Too slow to be good enough , turning circle of the Titanic but he is only young so may improve but not the pace. Bruce was ok and probably better but when you see mc auley and delaney ( played at CB ) you realise what a good couple of CB`s we actually have.

Whilst I do not think Bruce is great with Delaney out we seem very thin at the back. Bruce, Pim, David Wright, Liam Rosenior all gone and no defenders in. You have to think we have at least 2 defenders on the way as a minimum.

Yes, I would expect Keane to get a new CB in, perhaps on a loan until Delaney recovers, as I see no back-up for Smith and McAuley (I don't think Brown is ready).

Good luck to Bruce. He never settled here and wasn't really good enough (for our aspirations) but always gave 100%.

Best of luck Bruce.

A complete mercenary, I've never forgiven him for the way he played the fans and the press against Magilton when his contract was up last time. Has shot his mouth off to the press on more occasions than I care to remember and obviously has a very high opinion of himself considering he is a thoroughly average player at this level.

Lets hope Keane can now bring in a CB who is a team player.

How can you say Tommy Smith cant step up to the plate?
He made some good performances at the world cup against some of the very best in the world?
Better wrap ol gareth in bubble warp then :)

200,000 Is a a pretty shoddy amount of money worth at least 350k tbh but o well. Always tried his best!

Good Luck in The future Bruce!

good luck with the move best for every one
Yes we are thin on the ground now lets see how good the club is at working the loan market or getting in a replacement of a better standard.
If we have to play the young up and coming players better at the start of the season when every one is trying to get going

See we missed out on joe cole never mind( just joking )

Think we're lucky to get that for him. I can't imagine when a scout would have seen a good performance from him in a Town shirt for quite some time.

I think Smith / Eastman / Brown is probably good enough cover based on recent performances, but I wouldn't be surprised if Keane gets someone in

Jay DeMerit anyone?...still think he'd be a great signing for us.

Stephen Caldwell is on a free for god's sake!!! Is that good enough cover? :S

Oh, I just realised, Roy sold Caldwell from Sunderland to Burnley when he was a boss at the Stadium of Light...

Bruce was a decent player for us. How he became captain I'll never know. Clearly a player Keano diddnt rate. He did provide good squad cover and his flexibilty will be missed in the squad.
At least thats one player sold from the list (and on high wages I believe)and it opens a spot in the squad for new blood.
Demerit would be good but his wages would be too big following the WC.

good as 4 choice cb, no better.
£200 grand for us and a big earner off our books good buisness all round.

Greg Halford from Wolves would be a great signing for us. He doesnt play much for Wolves and they might be willing to let him go for a decent price/loan. He adds pace at full back and would add alot to our squad.

only 1 experienced defender, a midfield without any creativity and a hat full of mis-firing strikers. I have never felt so negative about a start to a season than this. "There's a circus in the town......."

Having Delaney injured is a big blow given his partnership with McAuley last season however during his absence I'd like to see our youth given a chance rather than a premiership cast off looking for a big pay day from us. Even with Bruce seemingly departing we will still have five CBs on the books. In the absence of Delaney I think that Tommy Smith deserves a chance in the 1st eleven & our back up is provided by Eastman & Brown. Most people seem happy with the McAuley+Delaney partnership so if it's fair to assume Delaney will take his spot once recovered from injury then from a wages point of view it wouldn't make sense to buy in several experienced CBs just as cover. Some of our best teams of the past in the Robson & Burley eras have been built around a base of home grown talent & so if we're not prepared to give youth a chance to gain some experience whilst others ate injured then what's the point in even having a youth set up. I'd like to see the young players backed & given a chance to see what they can do on what after all will only be a temporary basis until Delaney is back.

How accurate is this? I wouldn't be disappointed if Bruce left. He was poor last season. Agree we would need to sign a decent centre half - but in fairness would need to do that even if Bruce stayed!

Coolpooper added 17:32 - Jul 19
Agreed. With Delaney out, that leaves us one senior centre back. Lets hope Keane has some irons in the fire or we'll be as weak as dishwater.
