Clegg: Bust-Ups No Surprise
Clegg: Bust-Ups No Surprise
Thursday, 26th Aug 2010 11:25

Chief executive Simon Clegg says Roy Keane’s recent fall-outs with former skipper Jon Walters and striker Pablo Couñago have not affected the Town manager’s relationship with owner Marcus Evans. Walters left the club for Stoke and Couñago for Crystal Palace last week after bust-ups with the Blues boss.

Clegg said: “We have always recognised Roy to be a demanding individual. Flare-ups — if we call them that — occur at clubs all over the country. It is not something confined to Portman Road.

“Make no mistake, Roy is a very demanding man who is driven by success. He wants 110 per cent effort from his players all the while — and that includes every day in training. If not he will make it very clear to the players their shortcomings.

“Recent events have not affected the owner’s relationship with Roy — absolutely not. He remains hugely supportive and there is no problem with the way the three of us work together.”

Keane’s contract is up at the end of June next year and Clegg says talks regarding his future will take place at some point before then: “At some stage before the end of the season we will sit down and have a discussion with the manager.

"Without any doubt he loves living in this part of the world and as I have said before he is the man that the owner and myself believe can take this club forward.”

Got a feeling it depends on how this season goes, Mid table bye bye Roy Play off's new contract. Still think ME sets targets and if not met he will take action.
Jim Magilton point proved. Sack him on Tuesday Roy in on Wednesday, Got a feeling Jims departue was decided long before he went as there is no way you can sort out a contract in less than 24 hours especially with Mr Keane.

Does Clegg really spend every day dismissing any accusation of a strained relationship between Evans and Keane, or is it simply that the press bang on and on about it and he feels compelled to respond?

Seems to me there's less and less news being reported from Portman Road nowadays, and more and more speculation.

Oh for the days of Burley when you knew he'd be round at Uncle David's every evening for tea, and if he lost a match, he'd have no cream buns for a week.

Good on yer Roy - these mamby -pamby egotiscial footballers , dont like it up 'em. They get paid enough , the least they can do is show professionalism / effort. They have too much power these days, Cloughie would trun in his grave at the attitude of these so called "stars" !

These "flare ups" were not heat of the moment stuff, but part of a well thought out strategy by Keane to reduce the wage bill and change the style of play.
Pablo would have just sat his contract out (as he did with Royle if not confronted by Keane and Walters had been bigged up by Keane so he could sell him to reduce the wage bill and change the style of play, when the bidding slowed he had to act to force the issue.
All straight out of the Alex Ferguson book of football management, interesting times ahead methinks.

Its about time the manager ran the club I think the results so far prove the point as on paper the players that have left were better than what we have now (on paper). I use to go to portman road at least 15 times a year, but my last game was the 4-0 home defeat to Newcastle last year. The reason was because the players really were not intrested and as it was Sir Bobby's day they should have been. Also the fact I had just paid for 3 tickets, programme, car parking, tank of petrol as its a 250 round trip to watch them, something to eat all in all £200 to watch players who earn more in a month than i do in a year.
I will return this year.
I do not mind us losing but i expect the team to play with pride and give 100% and before anyone says I only watch a winning team i was one of the 8000 who watch us lose at home 2-0 to Stockport one wet November night.

“We have a perfect example of that in the way Sir Bobby Robson was given a number of years to prove himself. But of course it is important that we do well this season — without any doubt.”

I am thinking Roy Keane is more of your Alf Ramsey type of Ipswich manager than your Bobby Robson.

Karlosfandangal : I don't blame you, that Newcastle game was awful and the rot had set in my mind of our worthiness. But a last-minute win vs Coventry with the whole ground cheering helps restore faith. And when compared to ENGLAND, ITFC brings more joy any day.

The Newcastle game was the final straw as so many game the year before were the same, However I agree with you still remember Magiltons Hat trick goal with Bolton in the play offs, The second goal against Sunderland when we need to beat them to have any chance of the play of and even Vaugan head goal against Derby to keep the dream alive or even Petta and Ulenbeek flying down the wings and the songs that went with it and Burley's Barmey army.
I have the faith that we are just round the corner to those times again.

Keane may "love living in this part of the world " but his " falling out with players - what a surprise NOT - is going to be his ultimate downfall ( again!) . I wish we could get a decent manager who could have some people skills and strengthen the team and boost morale !

Clegg perhaps if you gave Keane some more money there might not be any bust-ups. Getting rid of 16 players or so and then bringing in 5 suggests somemone is not playing their part in taking this club forward. COYB! Lets keep the impressive start going.

remember walking down Portman walk after Wembley 2000 and catching up with Burley and Sheepshanks and accosting them for an autograph on the back of our shirts. Don't know who was more surprised, us to discover them walking there or them as they were almost walking arm-in arm!

I'm not suprised eitheer however conago and lisbie two players who feell out with keane would make good championship signings despite having seen there best days, I am disapointed that they will probably both leave on frees when there out of contract at the end of season however I do think with the fans and board behind him and players with good morale he will take us to the premier league coyb

I'm with Keane on this. A squad that works together, and which has a good team spirit will get decent results. Better that than a squad containing 'Stars' who think the club owes them a living. Add to that a few hungry youngsters just starting out to prove themselves at this level. Can't be any worse than last season.

Roy, if you read this I hope you can believe that the bulk of us true fans are behind you. You should be here after Clegg is long gone, just keep patient and keep the faith.

Because our manager is Roy Keane the press will always have their eye on ITFC for trouble and things will always be blown out of proportion because of the constant appetite for something to write in the papers, and Keane is a target for the press make no mistake.
But the set up here at Portman road really does look like it is something solid and steady again and i for one will be dissapointed if we do not get promoted this year but i know building a successful team and club takes time. If this squad can be given time and stability on and off the pitch i also think the good times will return to our club as it has before. The biggest two mistakes i think a club can make is firstly trying to buy success on the pitch with vulgar amounts of money being spent on players who earn ridiculous money and secondly sacking managers to often, trying to find a manager who can build a champion team in a very short time. Keanes biggest mistake for me was saying he can achieve promotion in two seasons (maybe he was trying to impress) with the squad he inherited but to sack him after two seasons especially with the improvement of our performances and results would be absolute madness, as long as the steady and solid improvement continues keane must be given time as is the tradition of ITFC and i for one am glad that we have an owner in the form of Marcus Evans, who at the moment seems like he is willing to continue the good patient tradition of ITFC in building for the future both financially and on the pitch.
i must underline the point of the improvement must continue and through time more players will join us and promotion will become reality !

This is finally Keane's own team and seem to be showing his grit and determination. With the injured players coming back soon ( Civelli?) we have a good enough squad to create some damage at this level. Play-offs look possible. Top 7 at present in league will probably be there or there-about at end of season.
