Cycle to the Palace Game
Cycle to the Palace Game
Friday, 1st Apr 2011 10:54

Fans are being encouraged to cycle to next Saturday’s home game against Crystal Palace. The club have teamed up with Ipswich Borough Council and British Cycling for the Ride To The Match initiative.

Fans coming along to the Palace game on Saturday 9th April are being invited to bike to Portman Road, where a free and secure cycle storage facility is being set up in Alderman Park in Sir Alf Ramsey Way.

As an incentive for the choosing this green and healthy transport option, Town are giving the first 250 cyclists a voucher for a ticket to a home pre-season friendly this summer.

British Cycling and Ipswich Borough Council are also providing various other prizes, while four cycling supporters will be invited to represent their stand in a challenge on the pitch at half-time.

Young British cyclist Hugo Robinson, a member of the British cycling junior national team who majors in Cyclo Cross, will be at the game to assist with the challenge. Hugo will be defending his British title in Ipswich in January 2012 when the National Championship weekend is held in Chantry Park.

Mat Cork, British Cycling’s recreation manager, says his organisation is delighted to be backing the initiative: “We are pleased to support activities across Ipswich that help more people have fun on a bike.

“From Ride To The Match to brand new local led-rides there is something for everyone. As part of our local partnership we will also roll out a brand new programme of bike rides for women in Ipswich this summer."

Town’s media and PR manager Camilla Haycock added: “Cycling to the match is by far the healthiest and greenest way to come and support the Blues and this sort of initiative encourages people to think about alternative ways of getting to the game.”

To pledge your interest in riding to the game, send an email, including ‘I’m riding to the game’ as the subject, to sports.development@ipswich.gov.uk.

eh? surely the 250 cyclists who have proven they've cycled the furthest should get the free tickets (not much of an incentive mind!)

I reckon GazMac & Delaney must be a couple. They do everything together: defend, contract disputes, bikes, etc.

Also nice of Damien to take his partner to a West End Show, flashing the tickets!

Maybe Jason Scotland can use a bike against palace it might make him more mobile, or he and Connor can use that tandem and we can have 2 up front.

Hmm, 300 mile round trip from Hampshire on a bike? Think it would lead to a severe case of the John waynes.

Yes! I've been waiting for this news for years. I can see it now, saddle sore by Bordeaux then parking the bike with a handy PC at the turnstile. This is of course a "poisson d'avril".

Pinching an idea from here in Sweden, a year or two ago I suggested to the powers that be (I can't remember names) that one item for the ITFC shop could be an ITFC bike helmet. Nothing came of this at the time. Maybe the occasion for a re-launch? Phil, if you read this, pass on this brilliant idea (!) to ... someone.
