Wickham Fee Reportedly Agreed With Sunderland
Wickham Fee Reportedly Agreed With Sunderland
Monday, 27th Jun 2011 23:40

Town are reported to have accepted a fee which could eventually total £13 million from Sunderland for striker Connor Wickham. The Black Cats have been making the running for the 18-year-old frontman since becoming the first club to lodge a firm offer for the England U21 international last week.

The fee is said to consist of £9 million up front plus a further £4 million in clauses relating to appearances and achievement.

Town are reported to have given Wickham permission to speak to the Wearsiders regarding personal terms.

Liverpool have also been strongly linked with the Hereford-born striker in recent weeks, but the Reds are yet to make a concrete bid, despite reports to the contrary earlier in the month.

The player himself is believed to favour a move to Anfield, having supported Liverpool as a boy, but Sunderland now appear to be in the driving seat, although Town manager Paul Jewell said in March that the one-time Reading academy schoolboy was only interested in a move to one of the Premier League's bigger clubs.

Spurs and Arsenal, who have also been eyeing Wickham since his days in the Blues' academy, are also yet to show their hand.

I would rather have the 13 mill up front. If were gonna lose out on one of our best players, why should we wait for the money!

Gauntlet has been laid, lets see if the big boys are now interested in him enough to enter some form of bidding war. Sunderland must realise that even if they are successful, SHOULD he break into their first team, it won't be long before someone else comes in with even more money that they just can't turn down ala. Darren Bent.

Wickham worth 13 million, Rhoades sold for peanuts? what's going on? Get Jordan back, see what he can do at this level?

That's kinda deflated my season excitement. Hopefully we sign an exciting player to replace him.

His value would only increase, pointless selling him now. 9 million sounds a lot but isn't when you look at it, think of the true cost of a replacement (value of contract + signing fees + agents fees + the actual transfer fee)
Starting to worry about the true ambition of Evans and the direction of the club. We have already lost our top scorer in Norris, we lost our 2 players of the season in McAuley and Bullard and had a load of the youth shifted out in Brown, Eastman and now Wickham ..in return we got players in who missed a lot of last season through injury / bad form.

More important to have him playing for us for another year.

Feel he has unfinished business with us.

Thankyou Sunderland for at least putting in a reasonable offer, could stoke up interest from other Prem sides, but Connor has still got a lot of learning to do, first touch, strength in the air, you can't do that on a Prem bench. He needs a full season at Ipswich and if he is not in the Prem with us after that...move on?

This needs to be sorted out and hopefully by accepting Sunderland's offer Town will have set the ball rolling. The offer is decent and it is right to accept. Other clubs will now need to match or better it. Hopefully it gets done soon and Jewell is given a decent cut of the fee to build a team and we can move on. The prospect of a Connor Wickham circus following us all season is not an attractive proposition and will detract from our main purpose. One player, however good, does not make a team. We have to think of the wider picture and what 's good for the club moving forward.

Can't help but think we were waiting for this before we bid for more players.

I wouldnt bother signing Bullard with that money, we can go for a bullard mark 2, who maybe aint so greedy! Sharps value will up another million no doubt if we go calling. I say keep Connor another season, or 13mill upfront + someone on loan. I just hope Liverpool of Arsenal come sniffing round now.

Above all I really hope it works out for Connor. We can't turn down £9m rising to £14m for an 18 year old. You may all hate Cleggy for this, but this is a good price. If Liverpool come in for him now they are unlikely to bid much more. But who knows? We've probably all bid too much for things in auctions.
If he doesn't go all the speculation could get destabilising on the rest of the team.
I'll be sad to see him go. He does have class. He needs to be playing at a higher level to be worth more than £10m and £9m is fantastic business for a championship 18 year old with no Premier league or European experience.
Of course he may not go. In fact he may be wise not to accept. If he is as level headed as they all say he should cope, but £9m is a lot of expectation to put on a lad.
I hope he sets the premiership on fire. To be selfish the more Darren Bents and connor Wickhams we produce the more our youth product will be valued the more good young players will want to come and play for us. Also it gives us the clout to buy a few quality players and to strengthen the squad. Of course everything changes is the funds are not made available to PJ. In which case I will be the one on the left with the pitch fork crying "a lynching is too good for him!" outside Cleggies office tomorrow.

If there were no offers for Wickham it would have been a bigger and perhaps alarming surprise. Its the start of the inevitable process.

Selling him now is a VERY bad move.
Every team is now going to try to take us to the cleaners on any signing we make. Watch the value of St Ledger go up dramatically......
Are we actually an ambitious club? I think we used to be.....
At least use the money well. Time to bid for Maynard plus 3 decent midfielders.....

algarvefan added 01:16 - Jun 28
He was never gonna stay another year, hence the new contract, good business by Town, he is as yet an unproven striker, but I wish him well wherever he goes, seems a nice young man. I think the big 4 0r 5 will see how he does at Sunderland before making a move in a season or two. Just hope we now spend on quality players, I'd still go back in for Sharp or Nicky Maynard as Connors replacement.

Hungry_Badger added 01:21 - Jun 28
Would be a shame if he goes as I feel we haven't really seen him at his best yet and for him to leave now after all this talk about him for the last 3 years would defiantly be a shame for us fans. Having said that 9mill plus add on's is a lot of money so I'm not surprised (if the story is true) that we have accepted it hopefully can be used towards new players.
