Town and Blackpool After Blades Defender
Town and Blackpool After Blades Defender
Monday, 4th Jul 2011 00:19

Town are understood to be battling Blackpool for Sheffield United defender or midfielder Matt Lowton. The 22-year-old plays primarily at right-back or at centre-half but can also operate at left-back or in midfield.

The Seasiders are reported to have made a £300,000 offer for the Chesterfield-born player, who came through the ranks at Bramall Lane having briefly been with Leeds as a schoolboy.

After loan spells with local side Sheffield FC and with the Blades’ sister club Ferencváros in Hungary, Lowton broke into the Sheffield United first team towards the end of the 2009/10 season, making his debut as an 89th minute sub in a 1-1 draw at Cardiff and then recording his first start in the 3-0 defeat of the Blues at Portman Road on the final day of the campaign.

Despite a red card in another 1-1 draw with Cardiff on the opening day of 2010/11, 5ft 11in tall Lowton established himself in the Sheffield United line-up as they were relegated to League One, scoring four goals in 21 starts and 11 sub appearances. He is contracted to the Blades until 2012 with an option for a further year at Bramall Lane.

Town are very much in the market for right-sided defenders with a lack of options at right-back and with centre-halves Gareth McAuley and Troy Brown both moving on this summer.

Pretty sure he is primarily a rb, don't think he has played any first team games at cb.

Have seen him play right mid mostly for Sheffield, quality player. Their best player last season, lots of pace and very skillful.

Another player who could be bought for his hunger and potential, good work PJ.

And, youth on his side, could be very useful.

Sounds like the sort of exciting signing that we all love to have. PJ has a record for getting good players and getting the best out of them; even if I haven't sign the lad play I'm exciting to hear and see his possible performances as an Ipswich player.

Do we have to be linked? Haven't we got the the self-respect and money to go to Sheff Utd and just buy this player if we want him?

We just need to be linked with a defender from Scunthorpe now in order to complete the tri-fecta of wanting players from relegated teams

It's all part of the 'transfer market game' to be 'linked' with about three times the number of players we need - to show we have 'options' - particularly now that we have money to spend. I've seen Lowton play a couple of times - he's quality. We need that mixture of youth and experience.

Seems like a sensible move, we will win with som of these and lose on others but better taking a gamble on guys like this than throwing a load of cash on a not very good David Norris or seemingly unmotivated Tama Priskin and having to put up with hem until their contract runs out.

Lets hope this goes through aand we bring in another young keen player as per Aaron Cresswell. Perhaps there are one or two other comparative youngsters out there we can attract. Any ideas......?

Sounds like a good prospect.

Get him signed PJ and keep the momentum going

Could be the right back we need, not sure we'd need him playing right wing though.

Never heard of the guy but sounds a good utility player. Just what we need. Can we compete with Blackpools parachute payments and the millions they will get from Liverpool for Charlie Adam?

I don't know the lad, but I've just seen this posted on the blades supporters site.

"f**kit! A couple of teams are after Lowton, he's the last one we want to be let go! "

They seem to rate him. Could be a steal for PJ. Anyone else got a view?

I've heard alot of good things about this guy, particularly regarding his pace and skill, perfect as a rb and utility. The calibre of player PJ is chasing is very refreshing. Either young and hungry with lots of potential or proven/experienced. I can see why ppl on here are anti Bowyer signing but if you read how well he played in the prem and in the cup last year then I think he would be a real asset and add some much needed goals and steel to the engine room. I hope the Wickham money allows Bullard to come and I also think these guys would bring the best out of Koumas (free transfer) if we signed him and really bring on young Carson's game.
