Clegg Reiterates Backing for Jewell
Clegg Reiterates Backing for Jewell
Wednesday, 4th Jan 2012 20:04

Chief executive Simon Clegg has reiterated that he and owner Marcus Evans continue to back manager Paul Jewell, despite the Blues' continuing poor form. The Town chief also restated that Jewell will be given money to spend during the January transfer window.

Clegg told the BBC: “Paul enjoys the full support of the owner and myself, and that’s why we’re continuing to back him and making money available should he need to bring in additional players.

“Obviously, things are not going well on the pitch at the moment and therefore we have identified some areas of weakness and Paul is looking at those at the moment.”

However, Clegg admitted that eventually his and Evans’s patience will run out, despite Jewell’s appointment a year ago being viewed as one for the long term: “There has to be a tipping point at some point, but we are some distance from that.”

Regarding criticism aimed in his own direction, Clegg says he has no plans to move on: “I’m not walking away from this club, I’m here to fight and to ensure I can do everything that I can to support the manager in terms of achieving the goal.

“My job is to support the manager and as long as I continue to enjoy the support of the owner, I will continue to do the job.”

Clegg says Evans has been far from penny-pinching when it comes to providing Jim Magilton, Roy Keane and now Jewell with money to spend in the transfer market: “When you look at the levels of investment over the last couple of years, they are considerable when compared to other clubs in the Championship.

“No one can question the level of commitment that Marcus Evans has made to this club, we just need to make sure that we start turning things around on the pitch and if we haven’t got the right players, we’ll need to bring them in.”

Elsewhere, the Blues and Huddersfield are claimed to be amongst the clubs interested in transfer-listed Leicester central defender Sean St Ledger.

Jewell made enquiries regarding the 27-year-old Republic of Ireland international last January and again in the summer but with the Foxes signing him from Preston for £1.2 million in July.

St Ledger fell out with manager Nigel Pearson after the Boxing Day game against Town due to his frustration at his lack of opportunities at the King Power Stadium, having made only 10 starts and two sub appearances this season.

'We've identified some areas of weakness and Paul is looking into those at the moment' - must have a big bathroom mirror in Marcus Evans home when Cleggy and PJ came round for the New Year celebrations!

Rightly or wrongly Clegg has no credibility with the majority of our fans and Evans really needs to get rid.

We really need somonec with a background in running a football club to sort out this mess!

What an absolute clown that clegg is! He didn't realise? Maybe a few chants and banners might need to surface at portman road soon then.
I remember Robert chase when he was Norwich chairman. The Norwich fans hounded him out in the end and he was just as clueless as you Mr Clegg!
Don't take us fans for fools and show us some respect! We will only take so much and right now the current situation is like a powder keg. A couple more pathetic performances and heavy losses and fuse will be lit.
Where is Mr Evans in all this then? Spineless and faceless as usual I see. I think after almost four years it's about time he actually had the guts and spoke to us fans and media.
If not go away and let someone who actually likes this club and football to own this club and who isn't afraid of the media!!!!

It's a complete disgrace. ME and Clegg are deluded. When will ME's patient run out: When we are down to 12K fans or when we are relegated? 68% of people on a recent poll have said they will stay away from ITFC until a change is made. 79% want PJ sacked. ME may have saved this club financially, but my faith in him has now completely gone. It is little wonder why people are refusing to go to ITFC with Jewell in charge - the arrogance of the owner is unreal. I hope he sells up and soon. Utter disgrace.

Wouldn't be surprised if Paolo was available before long, was speaking to the dad of one of his players Saturday, not a popular man!

I support Town and back Jewell.

It is Clegg that should be let go, not the manager. He clearly know's nothing about football.

Dear Ipswich Town

Please may I offer my services to my beloved football club. I don't know a lot about football executive management but I'm a diligent worker and can make a good cup of tea. I consider myself flexible and would give determined effort to whatever role I may not be entirely suitable for.

As a lifelong fan, being employed by Ipswich Town would motivate me as I would be safe in the knowledge that no matter how badly suited to the role I may be, or poorly or miserably I perform, I would feel safe that I would continue to receive the support of the owner until all hell freezes over.

Yours faithfully,
davidsc1971

Clegg the Clown is a complete joke. The transfer window has been fully open for a few days and we needed players in at the absolute start. Not playing it cool.

Havent we heard this before? Jewell will be given funds to spend? Thats what was said pre season.

Can you name one good signing that Jewell has made? I cant!

I left before the half time whistle against Forrest. We played every ball up in the air from the back.

Massive concerns for the future of the club, and I think Clegg and Evans are as clueless as each other, why Jewell is still Managing this club is beyond belief. God help us in 2012!

Its clear that Clegg and Jewell are here for the duration, they are just laughing at us and treating the supporters with contempt, the only language they understand is money so its time people did what I have advocated for some time and simply stopped buying tickets, its the only thing that will make them get their heads out of the sand.
