Town Again Watch Howells

Town were amongst a number of clubs at Kenilworth Road to watch Luton’s Jake Howells in action as the Hatters beat Stockport 1-0 on Tuesday. The 20-year-old left-back or left midfielder is a player the Blues have been monitoring since last season with Charlton and Peterborough also understood to be interested.

After a spell as a youngster at Watford, Hemel Hempstead-born Howells progressed through the ranks at Luton and is contracted to the Hatters until the summer of 2012.

The 20-year-old has made 113 starts and 39 sub appearances, scoring 14 goals, since making his Hatters first team bow in May 2008.

In addition to three Wales U21 caps, Howells has also made four England C (non-league national side) appearances, scoring one goal.

Meanwhile, Blues boss Paul Jewell may be interested to see that his former Wigan winger David Cotterill has been released by Swansea.

Wales international Cotterill, 24, began his career at Bristol City, Jewell taking him to the Latics for £2 million in August 2006. He joined the Swans from Sheffield United for £600,000 in January 2010.

Dunstable, we can't win can we? People are always saying we need to be looking in the lower leagues for up and coming young player, then when we do get linked some people then say he's not the class of player we need, what do you want? more Premier League has beens to drian more of the clubs money in wages and not look anywhere near the player we thought they'd be?
The only thing I will say negative is that he's not the position we need to be linked with at the moment as those prioritis are clearly our defence.

I am all for improving and having faith in youngsters but not so sure of this one, I do not want to get players in on panic they must be the right ones for the club and the future.

Dunstable, we may not know if he's any better than we already have he could be a real gem he's still only young but I can see the angle you're coming from. I thought it was great in the summer when we were signing big(ish) name players of the likes of Sonko, Bowyer and Chopra etc but none of them have really shone so looking in the lower leagues for some hungry young talent is the right thing to do. What we certainly don't need to be doing is panic buying (maybe St Ledger could have been that, is he really all that? We'll never know now) one thing I do think we need to stop doing is taking in so many loans though, I don't know who's idea that all is and why they think it's the way forward.

How can we not sign someone with such an amazing photo?

One for the future. In every position we should have two players fighting for the position. Ideally one established player and one younger player who is eager to be given the chance. Who knows, in a season or two he might be a star.

Our own academy has been a bit light on offerings recently so we do need to look elsewhere to fill the gap in the squad.

I do agree that it's a low priority position at the moment but do consider that journalists are only fed scraps of information and sometimes it's to distract them from the real deals that are happening (which are often kept very quiet until the last minute).
