Portman Pie Looking to Repeat Success
Portman Pie Looking to Repeat Success

Town’s Portman Pie was voted a different gravy by fans last season when it carried off the Hospitality and Catering News Best Pie League and the Blues are hoping to top the pie charts once again this year.

The Pie League, which is sponsored by Moduline, began last year after a Crawley fan, who had gone to Old Trafford for their FA Cup tie, told Hospitality and Catering News how much he had enjoyed Manchester United’s pies and wondered which other clubs were amongst football’s upper crust. After months of voting, it was Town’s Portman Pie which tasted success.

The Blues’ head of conference and banqueting Mike Rieder hopes fans will help the Portman Pie to retain its title, telling TWTD: “We were really pleased to win the Hospitality and Catering News Best Pie League last season, as it endorses our commitment to providing quality products for our fans.

“We have seen a growing demand for the Portman Pie and have it available in all kiosks this season, as well as developing a pie-only kiosk in the lower South Stand.

“The pie is a bit more expensive due to its use of quality beef and lashings of Adnams ale but our fans are discerning and appreciate this level of quality doesn’t come cheap and it is worth paying a little but extra.

“I hope the fans get behind the pie again this season so we can retain our title, which will be tough as we are competing against the big clubs with a lot more fans (and possibly less of a discerning palate!).

“We are currently in seventh place so we need the fans to start voting via Facebook. This can also be done by using the QR code on the napkins given out with the Portman Pies. Don’t forget to put in a football-related comment or quip as this will also get an extra five points."

apparently Morecombe won the best pie comp accoriding to the tv the other day! thats not just football clubs, but all producers! are there more than one set of pie awards? before you know it pie making will be like boxing, so many awarding bodies than none of them will mean anything :P

Well we're always talking about how we're looking to attract hungry, young players to the club..

Had one of the 'new' hot dogs at the last home match. It was absolutely disgusting! Not sure what the skin was but seemed about the consistency of a second hand condom.

Dissblue - I'd ask how you know what the consistency of a second hand condom in your mouth tastes like but I'm not sure I'd like to know - we'll have to believe you on that one, mate :)

Lovely pie, but a bit pricey. Football clubs will one day realise that they've got to stop ripping off the punters (esp in these difficult times) I wish they'd think about season ticket prices (get more bums on seats) Match day prices, price of programmes and, yes, the price of pies!

I never buy anything at the ground because it's all too expensive or generally doesn't taste good. The tea tastes metallic: what is wrong with the water at PR? Having said that, I've never tried a Portman Pie, so I'm willing to suspend judgement on that item for the moment.
