Kirton Calls Time
Kirton Calls Time
Wednesday, 8th Aug 2012 11:23

Town’s long-serving stadium and facilities manager Trevor Kirton retires today after 32 years working at Portman Road in various roles. Kirton, who has also been the Blues’ kit manager and coach driver, is a guest on Saturday’s Life’s a Pitch on Radio Suffolk (midday-2pm).

Trevor told the club site: “After 30 great years at the club, it will be strange not coming into the club to work every morning.

“So, yes, it will be strange on that front, going from working full on all the time to only having to worry about whether my broad beans need watering that morning or not! The job is 24/7 and it’s now time to hand over to a younger person, I can admit that.

“But I’ve had 30 fantastic years at Ipswich Town and the club will always remain very close to my heart.”

Chief executive Simon Clegg says Trevor will be missed: “Few people in this history of this great club have made such a contribution to matters off the pitch as Trevor Kirton.

“He leaves a large hole in the organisation which I’m sure his successor will fill over time and he is a man who will always be welcomed back with open arms in what will, I hope, be a very long and happy retirement. He certainly deserves it!”

Cheers Trev for the service. Nice to see a decent bit of loyalty in an age when people jump ship to the highest bidder. Hope you enjoy your retirement.

If only others at our club displayed similar loyalty. I was fortunate enough to be shown around St James Park, Newcastle (NOT the SportsDirect Arena!) recently by someone who had worked there for for a similar number of years, including acting as Sir Bobby's chauffeur. Spoke so, so highly of the great man and pops in to see Lady Elsie once a week for a cuppa and a chat! Such unsung heroes are the backbone of our football clubs and deserve greater recognition. Enjoy your retirement, Trevor, and many thanks for your huge contribution over the last 32 years.
