I only realised a few years back that each time team A is playing team B, team C is playing team D.

That's a terrible explanation, but for an example, when we played Leeds, PNE might have been playing Sunderland. They will play Sunderland again when we next play Leeds.

This is an obvious and logical way to make all the fixture lists work, but someone more awake than me will have to work out if it's the only way.
