We are still spending less than most of our European peers on healthcare (as a % of GDP). Perhaps unsurprisingly, this is an inefficiency in itself. So strained are our health services, people aren’t getting treated quickly or effectively (for both physical and mental illness). Such is the scale of the issue we’ve now become the ‘sick man of Europe’ with a huge number of people missing work through long term sickness. So whilst the Tories were ‘saving’ tax money on one hand, they were creating a macro economic loss through increasing the number of economically inactive people.
