flag question on twtd 16:51 - Sep 10 with 995 viewspositivity

on my computer, flags in subject lines appear as black flags (for example on sitters post), leading me to think that banksy's anarchist tendencies are much more common on here!

is it just me, if not, does anyone know why, is it a chrome thing (or has gav programmed it to appear blank for the "wrong type of patriot" like me!)

Welcome to the magic of Unicode.

https://home.unicode.org/about-unicode/

What's fun about our flags (England, Scotland, Wales, Northern Ireland) is that they count as regional flags, so they work off of that black flag with some additional data to then let the computer know which of the regional flags it is. I think some US states that have Unicode flags would have the same issue.

What you're probably seeing is that the operating system (or font) does not know how to display that additional data from the flags, and so it falls back to the base of the black flag.

When a device is fully unable to render, it falls back onto a box ( □ ) or this question mark .

thanks, interesting stuff, does that mean that the union flag is recognised?

wonder why the default flag is the anarchist one, maybe a white one would be more appropriate?

Is Unicode also the reason that computers can cope with a nation that is made up of states but are useless when you have a State that is made up of nations ?

It should be, it's an older part of the standard - 🇬🇧

Interestingly, it was originally a white flag. We actually have the documentation from when they changed it to the black flag, but annoyingly, there is no rationale behind the change.
