Reed signed professional with Cardiff in July 1947 age 19. In August 1948 he joined Brighton and Hove Albion where his career took off , making 132 league and cup appearances scoring 38 goals in total . In July 1953 he signed for Ipswich Town for £1750. Scoring 46 goals in 169 league and cup matches, and winning Third Division (South ) titles in 1953–54 and 1956–57. In February 1958 he signed for Swansea Town for a £3,000 fee. Making 8 appearances in the last weeks of the 1957/58 season, he was restricted to the reserves during the 1958/59 season and departed Swansea in June 1959.
