Spanish / Catalan political farce 20:24 - Aug 8 with 1055 views | BarcaBlue | I don't suppose anyone here follows Catalan or Spanish politics but the story of the ex-president returning today after 7 years exile has been bizarre. After the unofficial independence referendum in 2017 many politicians were imprisoned and others escaped to Belgium and Switzerland. Last month the Socialists passed an amnesty law but the judges in Madrid contested it didn't apply to Carles Puigdemont, the Catalan president in 2017. He's been in exile in Waterloo since then. Today was the day of the crowning of the latest President, socialist Salvador Illa and this week Puigdemont said he would be there knowing he would be arrested. Mid-morning today he appeared at the Arc de Triomf in Barcelona and gave a 5 minute speech. Then he disappeared. Two Catalan police officers have been arrested, one of them allegedly lent him his car to get away. The Catalan police then set up "operation cage" stopping cars all over Catalonia looking for him...but probably not looking very hard. He's probably already back in Belgium or watching Catalan tv in downtown Barcelona. The Spanish right and far right are apoplectic, the socialists in Madrid are embarrassed and the Catalans are loving it. As I write nobody knows where Puigdemont has gone

I think so too but he's the Catalan bogeyman in Madrid, Andalucia, Galicia etc. Catalan politics is pretty mad, there are far right, anarchist and middle ground parties supporting independence but the Socialists from Madrid just won the latest election.

It is a good read, one that needs to be read 2 or 3 times to get your head round the divisions between the Marxists, Communists, Socialists, Anarchists etc on the Republican side. Divisions still apparent today.
