Thought a nice bit of Friday nostalgia might be sharing memories of previous first games in the top flight on the eve of our return. I can only remember 2000, Spurs Away, I was 16. I remember getting the train, changing at Stratford (pre-Westfield/Olympics), it being unbearably hot and comically crowded on the way to White Hart Lane, really penned in the whole way. I had my Reuser 30 shirt on, and I was so proud to have finally got the Premier League arm logos added after 4 playoffs in a row. I used to love White Hart Lane for football, its always those enclosed stadiums isn't it, like Loftus Road? Mark Venus scored a typical Veno freekick on about 7mins, first team to score a goal in the Prem that season (before the days of Friday Nights and Saturday Lunchtimes). There were limbs in the away end long before anyone that uses the term "limbs" was even born . I remember ringing my Spurs buddy from school and holding up the phone to the away end noise and giving him much abuse. Erm... can't remember how that worked out for me in the end, but it was a great day out and left me full of optimism for the following Tuesday's visit of Man Utd. Optimism slightly stolen now by how lopsided the top division has become in the 20 years since, but no less excitement to be back. | |
