Are Leicester getting an unfair advantage playing a weakened Sheffield Wednesday 17:00 - Aug 5 with 1780 viewsWeWereZombies

https://www.bbc.co.uk/sport/football/articles/crm432xy7lko

'Sheffield Wednesday's players will fulfil their opening game of the Championship season against Leicester City on Sunday, BBC Sport understands...Wednesday, who have also missed payments to HMRC and face rising debts, have just 15 first-team squad members...players and staff have had wages delayed during May, June and July, registration embargoes have been issued, the North Stand at Hillsborough has been closed because of concerns over its structural integrity and boss Danny Rohl has left the club.'

If Wednesday remain a basket case all season then every other club has an even chance against them but a change of ownership, say, within the month will mean later fixtures could be played under very different circumstances.

It's quite possible that Wednesday don't last the season the way things are going at the moment.

But, yeah, I would rather be playing them than Birmingham this weekend.

I doubt they will look very different during the first half of the season, even if they can continue operating (which I hope they do).

It's already too late to make a material difference to the management and playing staff before the end of the month, so at best they start re-building during the winter window, but more likely next summer as they prepare for life in L1.

Bit like us beating Bolton kids 5-0 when they were in trouble a few years back.

They are going down. They can't sign anyone til but January 2027. They are going to start with a smattering of senior players and the rest U21s.

No one team gets an advantage. If they go pop, their record will be expunged, so of no benefit to anyone.

That game was a nightmare because it massively skewed our attacking numbers for the first part of the season!

I’d say that the teams who play them over the Xmas and new year period are the lucky ones.

Wednesday have a small squad and won’t be able to sign anyone half-decent. Come Xmas, the injuries will be building up and they’ll be playing a few fifteen years olds. They will then be utterly destroyed.

No more than everyone else had an unfair advantage against us in 18/19

I'm one of the people who was blamed for getting Paul Cook sacked. PM for the full post.

Brilliant we can batter them at PR on Dec 20th - a nice christmas present. Watching Barry Bannan running round like. a headless chicken like the last time we battered them 6-0 at home

No more so than anyone else who will play them. In fact, they may face Wednesday at a time where they have a semblance of spirit about them. They should be richer in pickings as the winter develops, providing nobody comes in to rescue them.

First game of season...
Got a lot to prove against a team which might be a little arrogant... (I hope)

Might be shock!!!!

Probably not though, but I'm going to watch the results for that game with a bit of optimism!

In fairness we got away with playing a Bolton youth team just before their takeover in early season 2019. They didn't get much better and were easily relegated and for us it was as good as it got en route to 11th...

Yes. But it’s the luck of the draw. Obviously Bolton’s been mentioned, but fate can also serve up an away trip to the league leaders when the spine of your own team is missing through injury and suspension. It’s just how Lady Luck rolls.

That made all the difference to the outcome of our season too!

There will always be some advantage and disadvantage to when different teams face each other over the course of the season. Hopefully it evens out to a large degree but it is like if you get 2 long journeys within days of each other or play a team when they have an injury crisis. To a large degree, it's the nature of competitive sport.

They won’t even play the fixture. I’d imagine they’ll have a mass sit in and it’ll be abandoned.

Lady Luck has been invited in off the streets and given her own personal upmarket boudoir, a guarantee of legal immunity for her pimp and all the sex toys her clients could ever need by the EFL though.

The transfer window will be shut, though, so no reinforcements until it reopens, even if a new owner comes in in September.

(If they carry gaps in the squad, they *may* be able to sign free agents outside the window- I'm not sure on the rules on that. It might be possible for them to bring in some Australian A League players whose season has ended, and who are out of contract, for example.
