The trouble with the US system is that there isn't an official leader of the opposition. Not one person who can call out Trump with authority. Too many local voices and groups.

to that end it's always astounded me that anyone loses after a single term, because you have the 5 year recognition for the incumbent, while til relatively late in the process you have the opposition party quasi fighting amongst themselves to choose their own leader; ok there are unpopular single termers (Carter, Trump) and/or those who lost due to exhaustion with the party (Bush Senior after two terms of Reagan)

Although still more popular than Trump which is the current yardstick to measure against. He has a net positive approval rating (+6%) and Trump is net negative (-28%) in California. Also leads among polling for the Democratic primaries, albeit with no one having actually declared yet, so very up in the air. https://emersoncollegepolling.com/california-2026-poll/

But there can be a potential Presidential candidate who articulates solutions that address issues that, whilst within their own purview, resonate across the nation. Which, assuming the normal process for an orderly and peaceful transfer of power, also applies to potential Republican Presidential candidates, but, they will be in Trump's shadow until the primaries.

I thought Newsome’s ratings had improved significantly lately, especially after Trump sent in the national guard. He comes across as a slimy operator though.

California upset with him over failure to manage fast speed rail project from Sacramento for 8 billion budget. Work started 2015 and its massively behind schedule and actual spend is already 14.4 billion. Add the handling of the fires crisis and he is not well liked even by Democrats.
Gavin Newsome on 23:24 - Aug 20 with 592 views | TRUE_BLUE123 | He is. He may be the only Democrat politician in the US not named Kamala Harris Or Joe Biden who has the name recognition and profile to take whoever it is Trump deems worthy (JD Vance) on in an election. He has charisma, he speaks well, he is willing to play Mega at their own games at time with taunting and tough talk. Issue is he is a Californian, he certainly comes across a bit slimy and he isn't someone with any sort of cross party appeal.

He was "joking" about that when he recently met Zelensky. “During the war, you can't have elections? So let me just see, three and a half years from now, if we happen to be in a war with somebody, no more elections? That's good," I think it needs to be a declared war which must be approved by a majority in The Senate and The House of Representives. I would in no way put it past him.

ooh slimy is he ? That's awful. on the other hand ... Trump has faced multiple indictments, including charges related to: Efforts to overturn the 2020 election results. Mishandling classified documents after leaving office. Hush money payments in New York tied to campaign finance violations. Civil fraud cases involving the Trump Organization (he and his company were found liable for fraud in New York). Civil lawsuits: He’s been ordered to pay significant damages in cases involving business fraud and defamation (including the E. Jean Carroll case). Capitol riot (Jan. 6, 2021): Accused of encouraging actions that led to the storming of the U.S. Capitol. Election denialism: Continues to claim the 2020 election was stolen, undermining trust in U.S. democracy. Foreign policy stances: Criticized for praise of authoritarian leaders (e.g., Putin, Kim Jong Un). Impeachments: First U.S. president impeached twice (Ukraine scandal in 2019, Capitol riot in 2021). Rhetoric: Known for inflammatory language, spreading misinformation, and personal attacks. Business practices: History of bankruptcies, lawsuits, and questionable financial dealings. Divisiveness: Widely seen as polarizing, fueling deep political and cultural divides in the U.S. Handling of COVID-19: Criticized for downplaying the virus and spreading misinformation. Oh and he said he would date his daughter if he could.

kind of irrelevant though the next president isnt elected solely by California, Newsome polls very badly in lots of places across the US. its like saying Starmer is very popular in Islington north circles, whilst ignoring the rest of the UKs take on him.
