It will register at 25mph. You will get a NIP to ID the driver. If you have only had 3 points 6 years ago you will be offered a Speed Awareness Course which will avoid the 3 points. Cost about £100 quid and can be done on Teams/Zoom.

Depends if it was a community group with a camera, they usually focus on the 20 zones. Then you’ll just get a letter saying don’t do it again :o)

Take the awareness course seriously. I know someone who was offered an awareness course instead of a summons for careless driving. First he tried to delay it then got a letter saying if course not completed by a certain date he would receive summons.

He finally attended a course, didn’t take it seriously and as a result received a summons. Double penalty no refund on awareness course, hefty fine and points in his licence.

I got a NIP for 35 in a 30 and was offered a speed awareness course for that, so I am sure you'll get one too. Deffo take it if offered. Saves you the points which will impact your insurance premium - you don't have to declare a speed awareness course to your insurer.

Where u get caught? Not many 20s are policed so handy to know.

If your speedo said 25 probable you were doing 23ish (most as set over) so possible you squeeze under the 10% + 2mph ACPO guidelines for ticketing speeders.

There aren't many cameras in 20 zones - was it in Bath by any chance?

I got caught by one in Bath some years ago. Attended the awareness course in Ipswich (was pre-online days) and all the group there bar one person was caught by the same camera, in Bath!

Definitely go with the course and avoid the points. It's the same upfront cost - but as already shared, your insurer need never know and you retain a clean license.

Probably just a letter from the local Council saying you have been a very naughty boy and do not do it again. I got 2 in 2 days near Lowestoft.

So that was the NIP asking you to confirm who was driving? If so - expect the offer of a course.

The course is pretty informative tbh. You have to be a bit of a knob not to take it seriously. As others have pointed out, it's a cheaper alternative to the fine, points plus increased insurance premium. Also, I think careless driving carries 6 points?

I find it impossible to drive at 20 and usually end up travelling at 25. Then again I know there aren't cameras in the town where I live, and parked cars aren't an issue, so visibility is good.

I have no problem with keeping at 30 or 40.

I've been caught doing 23 in a 20 through London in the early hours of the morning twice in the past 3 years. Hard not to go a bit faster when the roads are completely empty.

I got caught doing 39 in à 30 in Thetford, it suddenly goes from 40 to a 30 without much warning except for a small 30 mph sign. The police were filming cars at that point without giving anyone time to slow down.

Having said that I attended a three hour speed awareness course for the cut down price of £98. I actually enjoyed it and took a few things away, which I hadn’t realised. It was my first driving offence in 42 years!

You are over the 10% + 2 buffer by 1 mph.

I mean unless you were going past a school or rows of parked cars that is pretty pathetic to be prosecuting people for 25mph.

He is. He took a wrong turning decided to turn round using a large lay-by, the sort you get when a road is realigned. Pulled out in front of a car coming from his left and was hit in rear. Tried to argue, on the course, that as he was hit in rear it wasn’t his fault.

His wife did quite well out of it a 5 figure personal injury claim for whiplash. She actually thought her solicitor was claiming against the other drivers insurance, not her husbands. His insurance premium increased significantly.

The Speed Awareness Course I went on emphasised "30 in a 30 in 3rd".

That is, if you stay in 3rd Gear whenever you are in a 30 limit zone, you have more control over your speed.

3rd doesn't give the same control in a 20. Now I live in Scotland where 20 is the default in most residential areas, am I supposed to stick to 2nd Gear?

No, you're supposed to stick to 20mph.

It's 20 in most of the area where I live and I now find 30 feels quite rapid (as it should as it's 50% quicker) when away from home.
It's honestly not hard to stick to a speed that gives pedestrians and cyclists a greater chance of survival in an accident!

It's 106 miles to Portman Road, we've got a full tank of gas, half a round of Port Salut, it's dark... and we're wearing blue tinted sunglasses.
