What would you do for 3rd ashes test? 13:51 - Dec 13 with 792 viewsitfc1108

Obviously have to pick from players we have out there, which is very limiting. It's outrageous that players like Ben Foakes and Jack Leach have been discarded, and to an extent a player like Sam Cook, who would have done what Neser did in the last test. There are so many players who deserve to be dropped, but that's probably a topic, for another day.
For this test, I would drop Smith. Very poor at the moment with the bat and behind the stumps, and offers virtually no encouragement or noise to bowlers or captain. I grew up on hearing Alec Stewart and Jack Russell chipping away all game.
I would give the gloves to Pope and move him down the order to ease pressure on him. He seems too jittery to be a number 3.
Bethell in at 3.
Tounge and Potts in for Carse and Atkinson to pitch it up, and stop obsession of the constant short pitched bowling.
I would keep Jacks for his batting and off spin (and fielding!),
My last choice would be between Archer, and Bashir, depending on the pitch, but would lean towards Archer, with Bashir's poor form, and that Root land Bethell can turn their arms over.
Z.Crawley
B.Duckett
J.Bethell
J.Root
H.Brook
O.Pope (w)
B.Stokes (c)
W.Jacks
M.Potts
J.Archer

Bethell talented as he is, probably isn't the answer

Rew is the other keeping option I would guess and will go on to be a top player for England, it might be a bit too early for him but he has been getting runs for the Lions

Alcohol is the answer but I can't remember the question!

It looks like McCullum is doubling down with no changes to the top seven.
It must be quite demoralising being a batsmen, not in the squad on the outside, and with aspirations of playing for England.
I think in this regime, you will only get noticed it you score 200 of 50 balls in a county or one day game, or something ridiculous like that.
And then you'll probably just be carrying the drinks!

Australia has 4 good players only.

Englands tactics and preparation are all wrong.

1st test we would have won if we defended our wicket and saw off Starc by playing sensible cricket and not trying to score off him. Starc is the only decent bowler we face.

2nd test we made the same mistake and we dropped 6 easy catches. Pope, Brook, Duckett, Smith all threw wickets away in both innings.

The batsman look rusty and rushed. There is no desire to build longstanding innings.
The fielding looks rusty and The bowlers aren’t fit. (Good for 5 overs)
The coach comes across as lazy, reckless and risk taker.
Given above does team selection really matter? Smith was absolutely terrible last test yet is staying in the side per coach today.

Even if it probably isn't the case, they look like like they want the game to be over quickly, either winning or losing, so they can play golf.
That's what it looks like from the outside.
It looks like our batsmen see it as a weakness to dig in and play defensive or leave a ball. There is no respect to the opposition at all.
I'm on the fence with Stokes, but I hope McCullum and Key leave after the series, and we start again, AGAIN!

I don't see then binning players after two tests but it must be last chance saloon for one or two of them

Why is Jordan Cox playing franchise in Dubai right now and not even part of the Lions squad ? He was class for Essex in the Champo early doors and got a couple of nice tons before he got injured. Unlike Bethell who seems to be the chosen one with nothing to back it up, Cox can keep to a decent standard as well so giving you an option to rest either Smith and/or Pope.

Agree with Bethell. He’s the next ‘cab off the rank’ in terms of a batsman getting in the XI. How many first-class centuries has he got? Zero.

Being dull and bored over the weekend, I checked out who the back-up batsmen were in the 86/87 series. Wilf Slack and James Whitaker, who had 40 first-class centuries between them. Another era admittedly, however there is so little acknowledgement of what players like Dom Sibley do in the Championship games.

I know they wanted the extra batting, but it always amazes me that Foakes was dropped.

I'm not sure what you could change really, its feels like a train stuck on the same rails and no way to change course, its not so much can they bat, bowl or field but the attitude towards it that needs fixing, swapping players around doesn't really solve the core problem with Bazball

I don’t think Keys can be blamed for Mccullum actions but he needs to let him go when ashes closes. Stokes is a good captain. But he needs a coach who isn’t like him to help out.

I watched an interview with Mrs Thorpe, wife of Graham, talking about how poorly her husband had been treated by the ECB, with the struggles that he had.
Especially after he had being released by England pretty poorly after the incident after the last Ashes tour.
It has been put to Robert Key, in an interview a few weeks ago, that Liam Livingstone was struggling mentally, having been dropped by England with no explanation or contact made in delivering the news, or any afterwards either.
Keys response was, "Well he has my number".
I don't like him for that.

A classical test match batsman too

Rew is probably next generational star but probably a bit early for him, he looks a proper player

Having seen the team today, i'm surprised they haven't dropped Carse for Potts

Agreed some of the squad selections were baffling, but we have to deal with the players we have out there now.
Dropping Smith is an interesting idea - he's had a shocking first 2 games & poor batting & keeping seem to have fed on each other. However, I see little reason to think Bethell is the answer as because of England's bonkers selection policy, he's played so little cricket this year.
Jacks offers something with the bat & is a decent fielder. I still think Bashir is nowhere near Test standard as a bowler. His bowling average is 39 after 19 Tests, he is a rabbit with the bat & England's worst fielder.
Adelaide is a less bouncy pitch so Potts and/or Tongue for Atkinson/Carse might make sense. Would also help if the England tail showed some aptitude for staying at the wicket, rather than lamely giving their wickets away.

As a Cricket fan & a huge England fan, I've had enough of this England regime from top to bottom. I honestly dislike McCullum so much I might be approaching hate. I'm sick to death of their arrogance & bullshit. Their selections have been abominable for years now, their ethos stinks, & is a total joke. The ECB over the last 10 years have proven beyond reasonable doubt that they are unfit to manage & oversee the game. I honestly hope that we get battered 5-0 & in two days each game. Maybe then, just maybe, someone might grasp that we need proper management, proper coaching, & proper selection, combined with a strong message that first class Cricket cc ones first, above all other forms.

I honestly think that after the way the first two tests have gone, they should just concede and come home. I really hope they prove me wrong but I think this could be one of the most resounding whitewashes ever.

I don’t disagree with your sentiments around the game as a whole.

However the McCullum/Stokes regime has been better than many we’ve had previously.

It all feels really muddled now, they should be playing a proper spinner, Adelaide turns and it is going to be very hot, so the fact they are sticking with Jacks suggests they have no confidence in Bashir, and if that is the case, why commit the last two years to have him as our spinner coming into this series? Stokes says they are going with Jacks for the batting at 8, but that just feels like completely the wrong approach, if the top 6 don't do something this test the series is over, so batting at 8 shouldn't even be a consideration.
