Don't think that's going to be enough, nobody cares what those Scots say or do, right?

It will need ministerial resignations first I reckon, like it took for Boris to drop out. Which may not come.

There aren't any big hitters from the cabinet getting on the airwaves or social media giving Starmer support. He's on his own.

Nobody is going to want to be Starmer's replacement before the May local elections as that will be a bloodbath for Labour. Once they fail in those, they will kick him out.

I can see Ed Miliband coming in as caretaker until a permanent replacement can be found. They won't be blamed for the May bloodbath.

I truly hope not. In a world where Trump is President of the US and Farage is celebrated in our media as the next obvious PM - I can't see that what has transpired equates to Starmer having to step down.

Labour aren't exactly what I want them to be (and in the right political conditions I would like the opportunity to vote for a party that aligns with my beliefs more so they currently do at the next election)... but I do think they are doing some good stuff, it is just buried in right wing media and things like this.

Political parties never cease to amaze. Internal psycho-drama was a huge reason the Tories were booted and now Labour is doing the same.

Realistically, whoever replaces him would be in for a thankless task until the next election. Such is politics as it is at the moment. The medias covets controversy and ignores anything else. When was the last time you read a news article about a well performing policy or piece of legislation? Just doesn't happen, creating a perpetual cycle of 'the government is doing badly'.

This really shouldn't be fatal.

If this current incarnation of Labour has demonstrated anything since winning the last election, it's that they are terrible at politics.

An entirely self serving move from Anas, who is by all accounts, a terrible person/leader. It will have no impact.

gb, a couple of weeks ago, you were asking why it'd be a good idea to get burnham back in as an mp

"Look we have a competent and decent Prime Minister in Starmer who is running the country n very difficult circumstances, both at home and abroad. Labour have a massive majority and another 3 years in power. Why are people within the Labour party waning to put all that at risk?"

this is exactly why it'd be great to have another potential leader in place!

Well intentioned, but terrified of making an unpopular decision and some of the worst political instincts we've seen.

It's also why i'm bemused Starmer seems so reluctant to let McSweeney go. Does he think it's going well and this could rock the boat?

If Labour can't find a suitable candidate from 25 Cabinet members and another 370+ backbenchers then they are in even worse trouble than people realise.

most of them (fairly or unfairly) will be tarred with the mcsweeney fall-out, burnham would be better placed than most to avoid that.

would've given another, very strong option...

….to right wing media articles on here is outrageous to be honest.

Barely an hour goes by without yet another link to the dreaded right wing media, it’s rife!!

If only we had the occasional link to the left wing media to balance out the obvious bias.

It’s just not balanced.

Well intentioned seems a stretch. They seemed to me to be desperate to win at all costs, with almost no thought on what to do once they did.

That's the death knell for Starmer but it doesn't seem quite right to me that this is coming from someone who isn't an MP, and won't face the difficult consequences for a Parliamentary Party not currently ready for a leadership election.

I think there will be a fair few MPs cursing him, and I count in that number people like Streeting.

But I've got a solution based on what happened when Truss stood down, namely, appoint the person who came second in the leadership contest.

Step forward, Rebecca Long-Bailey.

Sorry Barry.

Starmer is holed beneath the waterline after that, just a case of when he finally sinks!
