My thoughts on yesterday… 12:04 - Aug 14 with 889 viewsboroughblue

For what it’s worth(probably not a lot), here’s my 10p on yesterdays game.

Performance:
I don’t get to anywhere near the amount of games I’d like to because of where I live, but I’d comfortably say that’s the most complete and dominant display I’ve seen us put in since KMc and maybe even in the last 5 years. The energy and pressing we put in from the go was scary, the trigger from each player to press and win the ball back as soon as we lost the ball was incredible. For large parts of both halves MK couldn’t get out of their half. The passing football was very easy on the eye, and on the whole it seemed to be done with much more attacking intent than what I’ve seen of us in previous performances games, we weren’t just keeping the ball for the sake of it.

I think second half was a bit more game management at times by slowing the game down with our possession, especially after the third goal, but we still looked good. At times it was almost like a training game.

My only criticism would be the classic ‘we should of scored more’ but I’m sure in the future games when things click a bit more, but also the extreme heat may have caused us to slow out game down slightly towards the end, but that’s completely understandable.

As has been said in a few places, MK are a shadow of what they were last season. But take nothing away from us, we were class yesterday.

Top of the league:

Yes it shouldn’t be read too much into this early in the season, as we’re only 3 games in (as KMc rightly pointed out) and we’ve been here before with Lambert. But it feels different this time, under PL we were top whilst putting in questionable performances, but we’re starting to look the part with a clear starting 11 with such strong subs to bring on and a clear way of playing and a clear identity. Like I said to the nice man next to me in the SAR upper, ‘to be 2-0 up and dominating and be able to bring on those subs is frightening, we may as well pack in if we do nothing this year’. Reason for cautious optimism shall we call it? Very long way to go with lots of ups and downs!

Portman Road:

It’s crazy how such little changes can make such a big difference. The dugouts, the big screen and the advertising boards just really bring the ground up to date. The implementation and use of the big screen was fantastic I though, with some good content before the game, I also enjoyed being able to see the goals back straight after and at half time. I can understand why some don’t like it, but I think they’re very basic updates that we’ve been screaming out for for years.

We’re starting to feel like a club that we can be very proud to support again…

PA system:

Other than the half time highlights starting with the volume being way too high (where I was anyway), the volume seemed perfect. I sat in the Magnus stand on Tuesday and thought it was a little too loud (and no, I wouldn’t call myself a snowflake, but if you want to call me one that’s fine, I’m not offended 😂).

My only little whinge, and I hate to do it and end on a negative, but Foz on the PA is just not a good fit. I don’t doubt at all that he has a huge passion for town, and I will admit he’s improved slightly, but i must admit I miss Rob (probably because we were spoilt with him for years!). He’s very slow and rambly and takes a long time to say what he needs to say. For instance when he was announcing our team right before kick off, him rambled about something and then had to say the first couple of names quickly to catch up with the big screen. Also, a picky one, didn’t need it spelt out for me that the players where having a drinks break (twice).

Anyway, a fantastic day, lots to be optimistic about and a nice way to get Tuesdays disappointment of our minds. Hopefully I’ll get back to PR soon.

I’m still trying to figure out how bad MK were. Or if we were just so good. Shades of the 4-0 win at Gillingham last season with the way we dominated. Could be a long season for MK if they’re relying on old men Johnson and Lewington and a bunch of kids.

There were a couple of times they showed how good they can be given the chance - the way they moved the ball on their left to create the missed header and on the other side the blocked Louis Barry had. They will do well against less motivated opponents

True, they had a couple of nice glimpses of what they can do.
