Interesting to note the allegation that some officers wore the thin blue line badge which is associated with white nationalism in the US. This, along with the police allegedly siding with the far-right protesters, does not appear to fit with the determination stamp out racism, sexism and the like in the Met.

It looks like they are doubling down on this sort of culture war thing but given the biggest swings away from the Tories in the local elections were in Leave-voting areas, this strategy doesn't appear to be working.

This sort of "right wing"* has two discernable strands: "Shut up and listen to what I think!" and "Why should I have to pay for stuff which isn't mine?" It's the cry of a self-centered child who feels they are missing out on good things.

Which is itself a product of a media environment in which good things have been promised (and, in terms of majority standard of living, actually delivered), but still does not live up to the idealised lives of stress-free leisure and luxury spending promoted by consumerist celebrity culture.

Plus the world is changing, from employment patterns to demographics. Fondly - if perhaps falsely* - remembered certainties are being shaken, which creates uncertainty and even fear about the future. Fertile ground for those who wish to use that energy for self-promotion (in lieu of any viable plan to actually make things better).

* I put it in inverted commas because there is no real ideology or concerted socio-economic plan there. It doesn't deserve to be lumped in with any of the more rational movements across the political spectrum in recent decades.

** Thoughts of homgenous, monocultural communities who worked all their lives in factories or mines, united by chapel and brass bands - but editing out the frequent poverty, industrial strife and risk of injury with the workhouse the only safety net.

Good Lord! Whatever is it?

Who could possibly disagree with a group supported by Rees-Mogg and Priti Patel?
