The first point is an odd one to make in 2023 - train passengers numbers have dropped dramatically with the growth of WFH/hybrid working. They’ve not recovered post pandemic, and I’d be surprised if they ever do.

“The justifications will always be made in socially acceptable terms, like the importance of biodiversity, bats, nitrogen levels in rivers, affordable housing, and so on. But the support for these rules generally has a deeper, underlying, and personal motivation.”

I think that’s somewhat harsh, whilst NIMBYISM maybe a factor for some people, there are many who are genuinely saddened at the loss of ancient woodlands to HS2. These are ecosystems that have formed over 100’s of years and can’t simply be replaced by planting a few shrubs.

They really aren't that far down on where they were now.

That paragraph you quote on biodiversity is one I'm quite sceptical about in the original article. The alternative to HS2 though isn't more rail elsewhere or less travel but more roads with consequent impact on habitats that exceed that of one additional rail line.
