The first half went as it should, we soaked up the pressure and countered quite well at times, though we never seem to create those “big chances” the tap ins from 2 yards, the onus is always on Delap/Hutch to produce a worldy, which isn’t fair on them, they need help and fast. Tonight was just one of those that highlight, man for man, we are not premier league. I don’t think anybody had a particularly bad game, we just aren’t good enough, promoted too soon. Squad depth is completely non existent, at 0-1 down, our game changing substitutions are Morsy and Taylor, vs Rutter and Welbeck for them, not exactly apples for apples, we are scarily short of where we need to be squad wise, we still need at least 3 or 4 on top of Philogene to have the slightest chance of staying up and I can’t say that I’m entirely confident we’ll do the business, as we haven’t several windows before, but who knows 🤷♂️ Some of the things that crossed my mind during the game: Broadhead - produces a couple of moments of pure class, but more often than not, they’re around the half way line and never culminate with a threat on goal in this league, unlike the joy he had in leagues below, and frankly, I wasn’t sure he was still on the pitch in the second half, just went missing. Hasn’t got the pace to be effective at this level IMO. Burns - looks great, but compared to Wes Burns of before. However, he doesn’t threaten goal and he doesn’t create “big chances” has the pace, but sadly short in the other areas that count at this level. Walton - 1st goal wasn’t his fault, came off Davis’ leg, had it not, would have been saved, unlucky. Morsy - no need for the hands all over the face that gave away the free kick for their second goal, ironically, assisted by his sub partner Taylor, who I thought could have done more once it bounced off his knee. Woolfenden - generally ok, but way too slow for this level, as Pedro ably demonstrated many times. Greaves - generally ok on the ball, but has never looked happy in the 3 back set up and gets caught out of position frequently. Cajuste - didn’t really contribute much in attack, or defence for me, had a poor game by his usual standards. No idea what happened in the second half really, I’m sure it wasn’t just physical, we looked mentally defeated and that’s the worst kind, maybe some new recruits will freshen the camp up? | |
