Walton Can Shine As Ipswich Suffer Palmer Blow
Tuesday, 28th Oct 2025 10:30

It has been a pretty mixed start to the 2025/26 Championship campaign for Ipswich Town fans and manager Kieran McKenna, and following on from the visit of West Bromwich Albion to Portman Road on early Saturday afternoon where the Blues secured a very narrow 1-0 victory, Town now sit in 12th place in the Championship table.

With 11 games played, Town have picked up four wins and four draws and are on 16 points. But there’s a long way to go and still everything to fight for in the games that remain, especially if the Blues can slightly tighten up at the back as they are already one of the better scoring teams in the division when on song and for fans who like football betting odds the division when we are on song and for fans who like football betting odds we remain a good pick. The West Brom win will come as a great boost to everyone as it had been a pretty dire week ahead of Saturday's action and that feeling certainly was not helped with the injury sustained by goalkeeper Alex Palmer.

The West Brom win will come as a great boost to everyone as it had been a pretty dire week ahead of Saturday's action and that feeling certainly was not helped with the injury sustained by goalkeeper Alex Palmer. Following the defeat to Middlesbrough, the Blues fell to back to back defeats for the first time on Tuesday evening as Charlton Athletic pulled off a surprise 3-0 win.

In addition, losing 29-year-old stopper Palmer in the 24th minute to injury was certainly not what McKenna would have planned for the day and perhaps contributed to our second half collapse in the game.

Whilst it was thankfully not a serious injury, and just a calf tear, it will mean the Blues will be without his services for a period of several weeks as he sits out on the sidelines and completes his recovery and rehabilitation. Town recalled young 20-year-old keeper Henry Gray from his emergency loan spell with Braintree Town as cover, and although it could have been worse for Palmer, he will naturally be a loss in the goalkeeping department as he has been the regular starter since joining the club in February. With the WBA win and second clean sheet of the season lifting everyone's spirits once again, Christian Walton has an opportunity at making a proper run at re-establishing himself as the go-to number one having been second-choice for most of the last two and a bit seasons.

The game against the Baggies might not have been a crowning glory moment for the former England U21 cap, also 29, but a clean sheet is a clean sheet and he played his part in helping to get the Blues back to winning ways and picking up a valuable three points, and everyone at the club, not least himself, will be very pleased with that. Town now look to November and the visit to Loftus Road and Queens Park Rangers, and hopefully back-to-back victories against a side only a couple of points above the Blues in the table.
