Jim Magilton was delighted with his first win as Town manager but admitted that the Blues' poor start to the season had been getting to him. Goals from Simon Walton, Jason De Vos and Dean Bowditch secured the three points after Kevin Gallen had put QPR ahead.

Magilton said: “Last week, I was so low I could have walked under a door with a top hat on.

"But that is why I chose this career, and that is why I feel the luckiest man on Earth to be managing this fantastic club.

"It has been a tough week after losing at Peterborough in the Carling Cup, but it's about self belief and we will try to enjoy this. Hopefully, we can use this result as a springboard and move on from here.

“Every player was outstanding and I'm chuffed to bits for them. It was nice to play like that with the TV coverage as well.

"I have total belief in the players and knew they were capable of turning in a performance like that because I have seen them play like that on the training field.

"We passed the ball well all over the pitch and were outstanding for large chunks of the game, and our play got our just rewards.

"The win comes as a welcome relief obviously, after the start we have had, and we need to build on it over the coming weeks.

"We deserved a bit of luck, because it has deserted us in recent matches. I'm chuffed to bits for the staff and the players, because we have been under a bit of pressure because of recent results."

Magilton cited Gavin Williams as his side's top performer: "Gavin Williams was absolutely outstanding and Billy Clarke showed what he is all about. He has been waiting for his chance and showed that he is a terrific prospect for us."

Dean Bowditch netted for the Blues for the first time in nearly two years and admitted his lack of goals had been on his mind: "Scoring has come as a big relief because the run was getting me down.

"I feel a weight has been lifted off me now, but the most important thing was the result.

"We passed Rangers off the park at times and it's a great boost for everyone at the club, especially the manager who has worked so hard to get things right.

"We have practised passing the ball constantly all week and closing the opposition down and it worked a treat.

"I don't think anyone can argue with the fact that we deserved to win the game and now it's important that we build on that performance."

QPR manager Gary Waddock felt referee Lee Mason's penalty award was crucial: "It turned on the penalty decision. From where I was, it looked as though the referee had said no, before changing his mind.

"It changed the course of the game - but I won't speak to him, because he won't change his mind now.

"We had taken the lead and got ourselves into a good position, but then that decision was made.

"It shouldn't affect us, but it did - and it seemed as though nobody in the ground thought the penalty should have been awarded.

"We keep getting ourselves into positions to win games and then not taking advantage, which is a concern.

"I wish we could have another game tomorrow, but instead we have this two-week break, and we will have to work very hard on the training ground before our next match against Plymouth."
