Ligament Damage for Bates
Ligament Damage for Bates

On-loan defender Matthew Bates looks set for a lengthy spell on the sidelines after apparently damaging medial ligaments at Barnsley. The Middlesbrough youngster, who is with the Blues until January, will undergo a scan early in the week.

Town's head of sports science Dave Williams told the club site: "It looks like a medial ligament injury, but we will know more when we scan Matt's knee.

"It's too early to tell how long he will be out for."

Bates's injury adds to Jim Magilton's selection problems for the week ahead. Sylvain Legwinski is out of Wednesday's trip to Derby County after reaching five bookings and Dan Harding misses the home game with Burnley on Saturday having amassed a similar number of cautions.

Bates's absence is likely to see a recall for Fabian Wilnis, while there could be a rare appearance for the out-of-favour Scott Barron in place of Harding.

Owen Garvan, who came on as a second half sub at Oakwell, is likely to come in for Legwinski at Pride Park.
