Town are one of a number of clubs being linked with Carlisle striker Karl Hawley. The 25-year-old, who is out of contract and has turned down a new deal at Brunton Park, was previously mentioned in connection with the Blues in January.

The 5ft 8in tall former Walsall man — who has had loan spells with Raith and Hereford — has scored 51 goals in 128 starts and nine sub appearances since moving to the Cumbrians in 2004.

Preston, Leicester, Plymouth, Stoke, Bristol City and Nottingham Forest are all also linked.

Meanwhile, TWTD understands that Town are keen to take Cambridge United striker Robbie Simpson on trial during pre-season.

The 22-year-old, released by Norwich as a youngster, has scored 16 goals in 27 starts and five substitute appearances since joining the Conference side from Cambridge City on a free transfer at the beginning of this season. From January to March he netted 13 times in 13 games, three of those goals coming in a 4-0 victory against Northwich Victoria.

Boss Jim Magilton admitted interest in the frontman last month with chief scout Steve McCall a regular visitor to the Abbey Stadium. Norwich City and Leicester City have also been linked.

Simpson currently coaches for the U's community scheme and is studying sports science and maths at Loughborough University.
