Ex-Town goalkeeper Wilf Hall has died from cancer at the age of 72. Hall was a member of Sir Alf Ramsey's 1961/62 League Championship winning squad, playing five times during that momentous season.

In total, Haydock-born Hall made 19 appearances for the Blues, making his debut in August 1960 after signing from Stoke, before moving on to Macclesfield in March 1963.

In TWTD issue 61 John Elsworthy gave us an overview of all his 1961/62 team-mates, including Hall: “He was a goalkeeper who had everything except height, he was a good six inches shorter than Roy Bailey.

“He was good on the ground and was like a previous goalkeeper Jack Parry and the later Laurie Sivell.”
