Reserves 2-0 Brighton
Reserves 2-0 Brighton
Wednesday, 15th Aug 2007 21:20

Goals from Chris Casement and a stunning Billy Clarke volley gave the reserves a 2-0 victory over Brighton in the Pontin's Holidays Football Combination League play-off held over from last season. It wasn't all good news for the Blues though, with Danny Haynes receiving a second half straight red card for violent conduct.

Northern Ireland U21 international Casement opened the scoring in the 19th minute with a header from Matt Richards's corner.

Six minutes later Clarke scored as good a goal as you'll ever see, turning and volleying home after good work from Sito and Jaime Peters.

Shane Supple made a great save from a freekick in the half's final serious action. George O'Callaghan had been Town's top performer in the opening 45 minutes, passing the ball around brilliantly.

Five minutes after the break, an ongoing spat between Brighton full-back Gary Hart, at one time linked with the Blues, ended with Danny Haynes headbutting the defender. Haynes, who was also dismissed when playing for the England U19s at the end of last season, didn't even wait for the referee to issue his red card before trooping off down the tunnel.

The young striker or midfielder now faces a three-match ban from first team games, starting in a fortnight's time.

Haynes's sending off switched Town into a more defensive mode with Matt Richards outstanding as the Blues sat back on their lead.

The midfielder, who boss Jim Magilton currently doesn't include in his plans, came close to a goal with five minutes left on the clock, his freekick cannoning back off the bar.

Boss Jim Magilton watched the entire game from Churchman's Stand.

Reserves: Shane Supple, Sito, Michael Synnott, Liam Trotter, Chris Casement, Fabian Wilnis, Jaime Peters (Ed Upson 75), George O'Callaghan, Danny Haynes, Billy Clarke (Jordan Rhodes 60), Matt Richards. Unused: Andy Plummer, Nathan Tooms, Curtley Williams.
