Former Blue Darren Ambrose is claimed to be a late transfer window target of Town and former skipper Tony Mowbray's West Brom by one of this morning's tabloids. Ambrose was understood to be a player who was interesting Town manager Jim Magilton back in the summer.

The former England U21 is a regular in the Addicks side and, if there is any truth in the report, it is likely to take a very significant bid to persuade Alan Pardew to part with him.

Meanwhile, the David Norris saga rumbles on with Paul Sturrock conceding for the first time in a while that his midfielder, left out of last night's game, might leave if the right amount of cash is on the table: "David Norris is the heart of the team and he has been, I believe, since he came to the football club as a young, raw laddie.

"He has blossomed tremendously, and when he plays and shows that urgency and that drive it seems to rub off on others. He was well missed.

The only way he will leave us is for a Plymouth price, and that's huge. At the end of the day, I haven't got a crystal ball and I can't foresee the fortune.

"All I will say is that we have got two days left and it will have to be a Plymouth price."

Argyle are understood to be targeting an initial fee of £2 million with former club Bolton Wanderers entitled to 50% of the deal. Town's third offer, revealed by David Sheepshanks after Monday's AGM, hits the £2 million mark according to reports in the South-West and it could be that Norris will finally make his move to Portman Road today or tomorrow.

Town boss Jim Magilton has denied claims that the Blues have tried to unsettle the 26-year-old midfielder: "I have just shown an interest in the lad. I don't wash dirty linen in public.

"If a reporter asks me a question, I answer it. I don't go out and try to make trouble for any other club.

"I think we have treated this with utter respect. If someone asks me what I feel about David Norris, I think he's a good player and I would like him at our football club.

"We're in the transfer window and as far as I know it's not a crime to talk about good players.

"But I appreciate that Plymouth don't want to let go of their player, and I appreciate that Plymouth supporters don't want to let go of a very good player."

Meanwhile, Gavin Williams's omission from the Town 16 last night has led to speculation that he could be on his way out of Portman Road before the end of the week. A year ago the Welshman was strongly linked with a move to Swansea City.

Chairman David Sheepshanks confirmed on Monday that one or two players are likely to leave the Blues before Thursday, with Dan Harding another man tipped to make his exit and Alan Lee having been linked with Burnley.

The Clarets, who signed Andy Cole on loan from Sunderland yesterday, made an enquiry about their former striker, but the Irish international is understood to want to stay remain living on the Suffolk-Essex border.

New signing Velice Sumulikoski was at last night's game and is expected to make his debut at Sheffield Wednesday on Saturday.

Elsewhere, the Blues sent a scout to watch Cambridge United take on Altrincham at the weekend. Striker Scott Rendell, who has scored 16 goals in 20 starts and five sub appearances this season, is an obvious potential target, while centre-half Michael Morrison has previously had trial spells with Everton, Preston, Newcastle United, Watford and Chelsea.
