Wilnis Test Tomorrow
Wilnis Test Tomorrow
Monday, 9th Apr 2001 16:00

Town's major injury worry Fabian Wilnis is back training and Town will decide tomorrow whether he is fit enough for selection for the crunch game with Liverpool. Wilnis injured an ankle in training last week, but the injury is by no means as bad as first thought.

Town's other main worry was Titus Bramble but he is OK. George Burley said: "Titus is fine, he got a knock against Southampton but he has trained for the last few days."

Town have lost one other player this week, Gary Croft has limped out of training with a groin strain and won't be available for selection. He was mainly in as cover for Wilnis so this is unlikely to cause George Burley too much concern.

Another piece of good news is that Richard Naylor came through his reserve game last week and will go into Town's squad for the Easter fixtures.

Burley said ahead of tomorrow's game: "The players have shown great consistency. They are looking lively and are fresh. They are hungry to finish as high in the League as possible."

He added that although the Liverpool game is an important one there are other teams in with a chance of Champions' League football: "One game never decides anything. There are five or six teams in with a chance."

He also underplayed the role of Liverpool's Sunday FA Cup tie with Wycombe: "It will have no impact on tomorrow's game."

The Town manager has some sympathy with Gerard Hoillier over the number of fixtures Liverpool have, however he said: "In 81 we had worse congestion and we had a squad of 17!"

As usual Burley played down talk of the Champions' League: "We're not thinking of third, we're thinking of Europe. We've got to take that next step forward and qualify for Europe."

And Europe would hold no fears if they were to qualify for the Champions' League: "We'll have no fears. We're competing in the best League in the world. We've beaten Liverpool away and Leeds away, so we've shown we can compete with the best."

Burley praised striker Marcus Stewart after his hat-trick at Southampton last week: "Marcus is not just a goalscorer. His workrate for the team is phenomenal."

The Town manager also commented on the tabloid story at the weekend suggesting a bid from Arsenal for Titus Bramble: "You are always going to get speculation. We've no plans to sell any of our better players."

Tomorrow's match sees 1500 new seats available in the South Stand upper tier should the safety certificates be granted.
