![]() Tuesday, 12th Oct 1999 13:55 Town today finally announced the identity of their new Chief Executive and he is... Howard Wells. Amongst the sighs of relief that it isn't as rumoured Graham Kelly, fans will be asking exactly who this Mr Wells is. Well, Howard Wells was until last week the chief executive at Watford FC when he resigned. It has been suggested that he may have left Watford because he was unhappy at his position since the takeover of the Hertfordshire club by Nigel Wray, the owner of the Saracens rugby union club. Previously Wells has been a coach at Wycombe Wanderers (1978-81), worked for the Hong Kong Sports Institute (1981-98) and the UK Sports Council (1989-96) before joining Watford in July 1998. He passed his FA coaching badge in 1973 and was a senior FA coach for eight years. He has also been involved with the English bid for the 2006 World Cup. He was introduced to the media at a Portman Road press conference this morning. Further details as we have them. Former Town striker Alex Mathie looks set to join Preston North End for a fee of £200,000. Mathie left Town last season for Dundee United, but had a torrid time back in his native Scotland despite a debut goal. He has been on loan at Deepdale recently and has scored several goals including Saturday's winner against Bristol City.
