Jim: The Result Was the Important Thing

Boss Jim Magilton admitted his side were nowhere near their best but felt that the result was the most important thing as Town ground out a 3-0 victory over Barnsley at Portman Road.

Magilton said: "The result was far more important than the performance. We set very high standards at this club, as do the players, and we know we've fallen a little bit short of that.

"We started jittery and the nerves from the players seemed to work its way through to the fans, but they stayed with us and we needed that. They take great credit for that.

"It wasn't a fantastic performance by us in any way. I'm the first to admit we were well below the standards we set ourselves, but we dug out a win.

"It wasn't pretty, we gave the ball away far more than I like, but it's three points, five games unbeaten and we're only a couple of points off the play-off places, so it's not all the gloom and doom that has been painted.

"Up until the goal, they were probably the better side. They came and produced really good football. Simon Davey should take an awful lot of credit for the way his team played."

Magilton was pleased with Richard Wright's display, the keeper making a number of important first half saves: "Richard Wright should be pleased with his performance. He sets very high standards and, by this own admission, he has probably fallen a bit short of that."

Barnsley boss Simon Davey felt his keeper was the difference between the sides: "Heinz has been magnificent for me since he signed. He has never made a mistake for me. Unfortunately, he has made two errors tonight and probably cost us the game."

The former Tykes academy boss wrote Reuben Noble-Lazarus into the record books, the striker becoming the Football League's youngest ever player at the age of 15 years and 45 days.

Davey says he had no qualms about giving the youngster such an early introduction into the professional game: "I was academy manager two years ago and I gave him a start in the U18s when he was 12. He did well when he came on. He didn't give the ball away.

"He scored a hat-trick for the youth team against Sheffield United on Saturday. I think if they're good enough, they're old enough. I have kept an eye on him over the last two years and have tried to integrate him as quickly as I could into the first team.

"He is a confident lad but he is still only 15. He is a talent and we need to nurture him in the right way.

"He has only trained a couple of times with the first team but they have taken him under their wing.

"We need to look after him. He has got to be dipped in and perhaps dipped back out.

"We've arranged with his school that we can get him out for two days a week so he can train with us.”
