Town midfielder David Norris has apologised for his goal celebration during Saturday's 1-0 victory at Blackpool. Norris denied he was making a ‘handcuffs' sign but admitted he was sending a "private message” to jailed former Plymouth team-mate Luke McCormick.

The ex-Pilgrims keeper was recently imprisoned for seven years for causing the death by dangerous driving of 10-year-old Arron Peak and his eight-year-old brother Ben when returning from Norris's wedding in June in the early hours of the morning while over the drink-drive limit.

The boys' mother Amanda Peak, whose husband Phil was also seriously injured in the accident, has called for Norris to be suspended: "I'm disgusted. To celebrate a goal like this is disrespectful to me and my husband and my boys.

"He should be given a ban. Norris is doing this in front of thousands of supporters including children, and sending out the wrong message that we can drink and it is OK to kill someone."

Norris apologised to the family and says he can understand the reaction to the celebration: "It wasn't a handcuff sign, it was a private message.

"But I can see how people might have seen it like that and I apologise wholeheartedly if it has caused any offence. Luke's a good friend of mine. But he made a massive mistake and he is rightly paying the price for it.”

Town are reported to be taking no action against the player.
