It is being claimed that Town have been in contact with Levski Sofia for some while about Georgi Ivanov. According to reports Nasko Sirakov, director of football at Levski, said after his side had played in a tournament called Albena 2001 in the winter that a £5 million bid had come in for one of his players but refused to say who.

Town are yet to comment on the Bulgarian, nicknamed Gonzo because of his large nose. A bid of anything like as much as quoted would be a great surprise, particularly as George Burley has said he is looking to UK-based players to supplement his squad.

Gonzo himself said of the reported offer: "I don't know anything about it. But if the offer is good for my club and myself I will consider it. I have a contract with FC Levski until 2002."

Meanwhile Konstantin Bajdekov, a director at Levski Sofia, said: "I can't confirm or deny that information." Which is helpful.
