Jon Walters is confident that 16-year-old Connor Wickham has what it takes to make his mark in the first team, despite his youth. The Republic of Ireland B international is raring to go after recovering quickly from the ruptured ankle ligament injury he sustained at Wolves.

Walters is likely to start against Doncaster, but could be joined on the field by Wickham later in the game, when he would become the club's youngester evr first team player at 16 years and 11 days.

The former Chester man told TWTD that he has no doubts that the schoolboy will be able to cope with first team football: ”He's a good player, a big lad, very level-headed. I don't think he'll let anything go to his head.

"He's pretty confident, he's a good finisher with both feet and has a great touch. He's a great prospect for the future.

"Physically, he's 6ft 2, 6ft 3 maybe, wide as anything, strong. He hasn't looked out of place while training with us all week and he hasn't been fazed by anything.”

There had been fears that Walters would be out of action for the rest of the season due to his injury, but a visit to a specialist brought good news: ”There was no need for an operation and the work from the physios here has been spot on. I can't praise them enough and I must be a good healer.”

Walters made a similarly quick return to fitness a year ago having undergone knee surgery which was also expected to put him out of action for the rest of that season.
