Town Considering Robson Stand Tribute
Town Considering Robson Stand Tribute
Sunday, 2nd Aug 2009 21:49

TWTD understands that Town are considering renaming one of Portman Road's stands in tribute to Sir Bobby Robson, who died on Friday.

In the days since Robson’s death, supporters have proposed various ideas with which to pay tribute to the legendary Blues boss with a stand being renamed popular, along with suggestions centred around the home game with Newcastle United on September 26th.

In August last year, with Robson battling cancer for the fifth time, TWTD Message Boarder Andy Feasey started a petition calling for the North Stand to be renamed in his honour, an idea which was backed by the Official Supporters Club and which the club didn’t rule out.

Greene King's sponsorship of the South Stand ended over the summer and the former Churchman's may also be considered for the potential name change.

Ideas suggested relating to the Newcastle game include both teams replacing their sponsors’ logos with ads for the Sir Bobby Robson Foundation and the two clubs wearing commemorative shirts which would subsequently be auctioned off for the charity.

On Friday, Town announced that all proceeds from the friendly with Real Valladolid would go to Robson’s Foundation.

Meanwhile, Robson’s family say they have been moved by the nation's reaction to Sir Bobby's death: "The family is humbled and overwhelmed by the public response to his passing."

On Sunday, Lady Elsie and sons Andrew, 50, and Paul, 52, visited the shrine created by fans at St James’ Park.

i like the idea of annual memorial match, i know its another fixture in a busy season , but making a bit of an effort was never a problem to Sir Bobby, .

What is there to consider??!...should've been done years ago while Sir Bobby was still around to appreciate it.

why does the club leave it so long to act on these things. look at the great mans face when he unveiled his statue. why couldn't he have been around to see a stand named after him. lets honour both our greatest managers no offence to mr lyall or any other who have gone before but why not have a " RAMSEY ROBSON " stand or name both ends after them.

also will the club be holding a memorial service for him at PR ?

why even concider it. just do it! he was a great person and manager, if it wasnt for bobby then ipswich town would have no history and would just be another little club, with nothing to show! BRING ON THE SIR BOBBY STAND!

It was said that Sir Bobby would have loved to see it named after him, so why wasn't it done before he died??? North Stand should be the Sir Bobby Robson Stand, and the South Stand should be the Sir Alf Ramsey Stand - it doesn't matter about naming it for marketing purposes + making money, it should be a permanent reminder of the 2 greatest managers of Ipswich Town's history!

Adding to my previous post - I read what a few others have written, and totally agree with the suggestion of the special shirts for the Newcastle - ITFC fixtures, and the idea of allowing the fans to buy one as well - it would certainly raise a lot of money for Sir Bobby's charity, and would be a very fitting tribute if fans and players alike were all wearing a shirt dedicated to the great man himself!

I think the obvious solution has got to be, the north stand being changed to the sir alf ramsey stand (which makes sense with it being on sir alf ramsey way) and the green king stand being changed to the one and only sir bobby robson stand. anyone agree?

100% behind naming a stand after Sir Bobby - naming another stand after Sir Alf would also be a top idea. Would be great to seat the away fans in the Sir Alf Ramsey Stand to remind them...

Also an excellent idea about manufacturing a commemorative strip for the Ipswich-Newcastle game (rather than just auctioning off the players' shirts after the game). That would give all the fans an opportunity to buy one, and raise more funds for Sir Bobby's Foundation. As for the designs, how about Ipswich '81 and Newcastle '03 replica shirts? :^D

Would be a very fitting tribute to Sir Bobby, personally i wish it had been done years ago, the newcastle game will be a perfect time if it goes ahead, just a shame the great man won't be there to see it. RIP Sir Bobby "

Don't worry, he'll be there!

A fiitng tribute naming a stand after in my opinion the greatest I.T.F.C. manager, North stand should be named the Sir Alf Ramsey stand bearing in mind that it is in Sir Alf Ramsey Way and South Stand should be named the Sir Bobby Robson stand in September at the Newcastle game, the games proceeds should then be donated to the charity that Sir Bobby worked so tirelessly for, lets hope those who have the power do the right thing - and take into account all the supporters opinions - truly recognise and acknowledge 'our legend' .

Agree 100% with dalinghooblue.
He was a Legend with us before nufc so we should name our stand 1st. Its just a pity we had to wait till he left us. Thanksfor all the memories. I must admit i was 1 of the BR out crowd all those years ago how glad & proud i was when he didn't go. RIP SIR BOB
