Keane: No Complaints at Result and Looking at Up to Four Signings
Keane: No Complaints at Result and Looking at Up to Four Signings
Saturday, 29th Aug 2009 19:09

Boss Roy Keane had no complaints at the result after his side’s 1-1 home draw with Preston North End. The Town manager says he is looking sign three or four new players before the transfer window closes on Tuesday.

Keane said: “We huffed and puffed and brought all our three substitutes on to try and win the game.

"But I can't have any complaints about the result. If anything, Preston looked more dangerous on the break.

"It was frustrating, but I don't think we did enough to win the game. We had a lot of half chances but the hardest part of football is putting the ball in the back of the net and we didn't do that in the second half.

"When Preston went down to 10 men, it should have been easier in terms of moving the ball a bit quicker and more penetration, but we huffed and puffed and never really opened them up.

"We had no player today with the quality that could go and get a goal for us, so I can have no complaints over the result.

"The effort was there, I can't fault the players for that, but we lacked the quality in the final third and that is what football is all about.

“I suppose this game shows why we're desperately trying to add to our squad. At the moment we're nowhere near but I'm expecting a busy couple of days. I certainly won't be putting my feet up and hopefully I can bring three, maybe four, players in before Tuesday.

"I have a very good idea of the areas I want to strengthen and there's a lot of hard work ahead."

Sunderland pair Carlos Edwards and Grant Leadbitter have been in talks with the Blues in the latter part of the week with personal terms understood to be the sticking point. The pair are certain to have to take significant drops in pay when moving from the Premier League to the Championship.

Preston boss Alan Irvine was unhappy at the red card shown to Callum Davidson for handball: "I thought it was a poor decision. We're told you have to make your body bigger - that's the criteria for it to be a red card.

"But Callum had his arms in front of his body. It was a natural reaction when someone smashes the ball at you from four yards."

Irvine was pleased with his team's response to being a man down: "They're a terrific group of players. They know their limitations, but they also know they'll get rewarded for working hard.

"They're prepared to do the horrible jobs to make sure we stay in games. We spoke about it at half-time and said things could go one of two ways. We could either feel sorry for ourselves and be a bit angry about what had happened or go out and get a good result with one man short.

"That was what we did and, if we'd chosen our passes better on the counter-attack, it might have been a different result."

its good to end our losing run a good point against a not bad side all tho 10 men and i agree with keano we lacked a cutting edge we need two strikers or creative midfielder such as gio to solve this and make the goals. Trotter has yet to get up to speed perhaps it would have been better for him to join scunny, hopefully we'll get edwards as he is versitile and can cover a couple of positions rm and rb and leadbitter as hes got good pedigree at this level. We probaly need a full back as today it showed the lack of depth (4 centre halfs all playing), quality there and maybe a centre half as well although we have got depth and potenial there.

Heard that d wrights on his way to reading thats why he didn't play today.

People really should shut up, we played well today. They are 'clicking' and looked a hell of a lot better. I think we lost momentum when the 3 subs came on. We'd been creating a lot of chances; Martin, Walters, Priskin and Pab all looked good in what they had to do. Stead did nothing when he came on and the same must be said for Wickham - Quinn looked good though. I think people expect too much. Yes, we have a new manager and a some new players but we aren't going to be Brazil overnight. Give it a season and I think we'll be fighting for a place in the top 2.

I agree 4 players is a must!, 2 of them need to be strikers, our current strikeforce is just not up to it, they would struggle to hit a barn door, where are all those blinkered fans than keep telling me to give Priskin time, by the time he "settles in" Connor Wickham will have retired from football!!!

Well said, we are capable of that this season miracles don't happen that often and lightning will surely not strike twice as far as Keane is concerned. I hope I am wrong though.

Surely Keane knew this in Pre season? , Did he not see how poor stead, macauley, trotter, quinn, delaney, and Garvan actually are? I think the 2 end of season results fooled Keane into a false sense of security. Alot of work to do im afraid and can anyone see Keane spending money , not workin out and walkin away?

OK so RK says he is bringing in four players. Yeah, yeah we know he can talk the talk now can he walk the walk? Four new players, decent players not four Irish plonkers by Tuesday? I wish him luck but somehow I doubt it will happen.
Mind you I'd be delighted if he proved me wrong.

Things are looking up, slowly slowly catchy monkey!

The most embarrassing thing about today is the so called support.... it's disgraceful! The North Stand were even quite during the better spells in the game. And as for those moaning idiots that phone in to Radio Suffolk (most don't even attend the games) please have something a little more constructive to say rather than harping on about the past. Roy is building a team that will blow the opposition away NEXT season, for this season, however hard we may find it, we are going to have to be patient. I do believe we will be within a shout of the playoffs come May but I for one will be happy to see a winning team created during this season and one that will be able, with a few tweaks, to hold its own in the promised land that is the Premier League.

The problems have rooted from Keane only having to judge his players on training and playing Irish teams. It's not until now he's realised how poor some players are.

We need Edwards as RB, Leadbitter to partner Colback or Healey in midfield, a CB partner for Bruce in the mould of De Vos and a pacey striker like Wellbeck or Dos Santos (not Beckford!), then we can start the season again after the internationals.

Don't see why some fans are getting their knickers in a twist, if come the end of sept we haven't signed any quality and are still without a win then panic but I have faith that Keano will sign the players we need and we will be a force in the championship!

ItfcLoyal - have you considered that all the negativity around PR is rubbing off on the team? Poor support and the local rag stirring up trouble is doing nothing to help. No we are not setting the world on fire yet, but so soon into the season the booing and negativity is rather premature and unlikely to help light the touch paper for roaring success on the pitch.

My opinion only.

Serious signings have got to be made; if this season is going to be a success.
Still was a good point today.

New signings I think cannot come any quicker for us.
The team is simply way below par, I went to a game today where the players were not playing as a team.. Yes i'm talking about the Ipswich Town vs. Preston North End game, there was nothing there to excite me about a promotion winning campaign, and not only today but since the season started.
Keane is right, this a chance to actually put this team right and off load some dead wood and I think that's something he can and will do. Let's just hope they bring some much needed quality to a dismal squad of players.

Wright - did his job
McCauley - poor, no composure, no commitment, no pace
Pim - see above
Smith - see above
Bruce - not necessarily better than the above, but showed some commitment!!
Walters - ok in pacthes, but inconsistent
Martin - did ok, had a go, didnt always get it right but showed some effort
Trotter - poor, not a passer, dribbler, tackler, etc - not good enough!
Colback - did well, improved as game went on
Pablo - showed good touches and commitment
Priskin - just didnt show enough - must do better!

Lets hope we get these new signings. Keane can only play what he has at the moment, and most of them just arent up to Championship standard.

I'm pleased with the bit of optimism on here today, unfortunately I am unable to share it. These players need to be dammed good as we have something fundimentally wrong with the side right now, we have no cutting edge at all.

The man of the match by a country mile was Colback today, he was quality.

Tommy Smith and Liam Trotter are simply not good enough. I need Priskin to show his worth.
