Keane Slams Defending
Keane Slams Defending
Saturday, 12th Sep 2009 22:51

Boss Roy Keane slammed his side’s defending after the Blues’ 3-1 defeat at Middlesbrough. Town again conceded soft goals, all but gifting the home side the victory.

Keane said: "When you look at the goals we've conceded all season, it has been a horror show," said Keane. "And there have been another three today.

"We have had decent possession and always looked a threat but as soon as we lose it we are in trouble and we've conceded a goal. We can't keep on giving the ball away.

“And up the other end too. We have put good balls into the area but not made them count.

"If it was about corners and balls into the box we'd be well clear at the top. We can't keep on making excuses."

Keane says there is no panic despite his side languishing second from bottom: "I wouldn't call it a crisis. Supporters may call it that, but I would call it a challenge.

"We are certainly not panicking. Are we disappointed? Yes. Are we frustrated? Yes. But we are not panicking.

"We have a decent squad here and between the boxes we are playing some good stuff.

"Maybe we are lacking a bit of confidence at the moment because of the lack of a win but it will come, it will gel. It is early days yet."

The Town manager was pleased with his three recent signings: "The three new lads did OK and they bring quality to the side, but you can't win matches with three players, however much difference they make.

"We've got to go again against Nottingham Forest. I have made changes and have given players opportunities and some others may get a chance on Tuesday night."

Boro manager Gareth Southgate admitted the scoreline flattered his side: "I thought we were laboured at times, particularly in the second half when they had so much of the ball.

"I thought the quality of the goals was excellent and I was delighted that Jeremie came off the bench and made an impact like that. It is nice for a manager when a player makes his point like that.

"But the game wasn't as easy for us as the scoreline suggests. We were made to work hard and we lost concentration at the end and gave away a soft penalty and the clean sheet. We need to be more ruthless."

KeanoITFC09 you must be the biggest optimist out there . Keane slgged off the defence saying it has been a " horror show all season" - who's in charge ?? The man himself. He won't get anywhere by slagging off and demoralising the team . The squad is now stronger than it was . He now needs to build self-belief and boost morale in the team . Can he do it ? Is he the man to do it ? Not convinced.

This season the Championship has probably had the best teams relagated and promoted into it than ever before. So the play-offs were probably always our realistic aim this season . When Keane took over in my opinion (and most others) we needed a Centre Half and a '20 goal a season' striker . By the way, a month ago every single posting included the phrase '20 goal a season striker' and I havent read it once since we signed Priskin !!!!.
Anyway a few full backs and midfielders later we still dont have our Centre back and I dont believe from what I have seen that Priskin is the striker.
Wood and Welbeck for me and loan out some dead wood.

KeanoITFC09.....LIKEWISE,i hope all those who call us moaners are brave enough to stand up and say at the end of the season [possibly before ],that they were wrong and the Keano experience has been one hell of a mistake .

.."touche"..I hope you're all men/women enough to hold your hands up if and when Keane gets the boot/walks out on us.

I'm not a Keane fan..I hope he turns things around for the club's sake, but i'd prefer to see Burley or Curbishley doing the job if i'm totally honest.

All of you saying get Keane out are absolutely ludacrus. I agree with keanoitfc09 when RK turns us into a top six side within the next two seasons I hope you'll stand up and admit you are wrong. All of the people saying get keane out are most probably the armchair supporters who listen to brenner wooley on radio Suffolk every week instead of going because I for one travelled to Middelsbrough and for periods we were the better side and we had alot more shots. Before the boro game when we signed the 3 new boys everyone was so enthusiastic and now it's negativity again just cos we lost the game after to a team who lets face it, are still probably premiership standard. Cmon let's all get behind RK and the boys and they will do the business against Forest

Ipswich Town is our club,we can not walk away, change team, kiss a different badge, like most players and managers do at sometime in their careers,so to all fans that think my opinons are wrong shut up and leave me alone to worry that OUR once great club has lost its heart and sole

I am afraid to say that whoever you pick along the back four with what we have is just not good enough. Whichever permutation you use what we have will always concede. Wright has lost his pace big time, McAuley is going backwards which is sad as I like him, Pim cannot defend nor pass, Smith is worse than he was last season and Delaney well what a disappointment he is for £800K no wonder Jim didn't stand in his way. For me the alarm bells are beginning to ring as I cannot see where the next win is coming from. Forest have 4 top line strikers and must be relishing the thought of running round our back line.
On top of our defensive problems we cannot score either - quite simply this is a recipe for failure. Keano need to wave the magic wand with his loan signings.
Team for Tues (Just for fun) Wright, Edwards, Macauley (last chance) Delaney (give him a go at centre back) and Rosenior Midfield Walters, Bruce (Playing in front of back 4), Leadbitter and Martin. Up front Priskin and Pablo (as we are at home). All about opinions I know so don't shoot me down

I'm not going to try and tell the club management who they should be picking. You lot would all pick a different team by the looks of it, and in any case what makes you think you know better than the pros at the club.

I've been watching and supporting this club since 1959 - a lot longer than some of the people who make childish remarks on this site. I've seen good, bad and indifferent seasons and those of you that seem to think Town have a God given right to win every game should grow up. I think a lot of those 'fans' have probably never themselves played organized football and should learn how the game is played before they start mouthing off about what RK should or shouldn't be doing.

dirtydingusmagee and Lightningboy - I'm sure millions of Scots also wish that Burley would come back and manage us. Burley was given SIX YEARS before he managed to get us promoted. You're giving Keane SIX GAMES. Of course! Stupid me! Keane's rubbish, let's get Burley back - it all makes sense now...

NorseBlue, I see the point you are trying to make and don't want to argue with you directly. (As far as I know, Norway and Sweden gave up fighting each other over 100 years ago.) Obviously Keano should be given more time and while he is here, we should be behind him all the way. But Burley is something of a nostalgia trip for some of us (older?) fans. He is "one of us." Not only that, during his time he took us to several play-offs and played the open, attractive, attacking kind of football that romantics like me associate with ITFC. Even if it took six years to go up, you felt that there was progress and it was exciting and entertaining to watch along the way. I wish RK all the best, absolutely. But he has a long way to go yet to restore the feel-good factor of the Burley era. COYB

Er........is that the same G. Burley who put the club in administration with some of the worst signings known to man? Selective memory is a wonderful thing!

It'll take time to sort this team out from where it was last year; we had three new players on the park Saturday. Let's hope for better on Tuesday. COYB!!!!

Oh - sorry 'bout that (above) - the cat walked on my keyboard!

Whatever you think of RK, please get behind the team at PR - or don't bother coming. Just now they need our support more than ever.

SomershamBlue - your cat's post was more insightful than a lot of the cobblers posted on here, lol! I do agree with your second post however - well put.

Everyone else (pro- and anti-Keane) - please put your daggers away and let's all get behind the boys!! Once that first win comes we will be unstoppable .... hopefully!

Everybody that keeps talking about how bad Magilton was are now probably the ones slagging off Keane .We keep saying give RK time to turn us into a top six side and how good his team will be in time !! Magilton was only one win away from top six sides in last two seasons and apparantly his sides were crap and the players awful !!!
We had the players last year they just needed a manager who could motivte them for all games and some consistency, a new centre back ,left back and a prolific scorer , At the present time we need a new centre back ,left back and a prolific scorer and we havent won at all so saying RK is building a much stronger squad is a little hopeful Delaney ,Healy ,Priskin and Martin have been very poor simple as .
Why dont we try and get Luke Young on loan from Villa good left back who hasnt played at all this season ?

On the bright side ....the optimists on here do give me something to smile if not laugh about,... just as well really .

Just a thought for the anti-Keanites ... granted we haven't had a great start this season. BUT ..... the stats say that we have had about the most attempts on goal in the Champo this season so far - so Keane must be doing something right, eh? Once the strikers start to fire on all cylinders then some of those chances are going to be hitting the back of the net. And if we can tighten up at the back (Shittu?) then things will improve quickly.

And what will you do then, O Wise Complainers ....? Seems some of you actually ENJOY the fact that we are losing because it gives you something to moan about!!! God forbid you might actually start to be positive about the team and manager! In answer to those intent on predictions of doom and gloom - I get my pleasure (and optimism) from BELIEF and HOPE that things will get better, not from saying "I told you so" when we lose. We all hurt when the team loses - no need to make it worse!

Sorry, I did say daggers away, didn't I ...? Oops.

Dobie73 as i said in my post above we have needed a centre back and a finisher for three or more seasons and have been top of the attempts league for the same amount of time, these things should have been sorted in pre season .Surely everyone on here wants RK and the Town to do well but he has to stand by his results and signings and players released or not playing .

I agree SteveitfcSWEDEN and La Paz. But sentimentality and football don't mix too well Steve. I'm not sure dobbie73 is disagreeing with you Surco72, and I'm sure if Keane could have sorted it out pre-season, he would have done. To be fair, he only had two competitive games to look at the entire squad last season, so there's a still a lot of sorting out to do....You mentioned four players - Delaney was apparently bought before Keane came to itfc(!), Healy was a gamble but at £50,000 a very cheap one, Priskin WILL come good and Martin is for the future but has shown some great skill already (needs some more muscle). Then the other three - Edwards, Leadbitter and Rosenior....You cannot say these players aren't quality.

I'd love to see Garvan or Trotter given a chance alongside Leadbitter. And D Wright at LB or Balkestein.

The point of all of this is - Keane MAY end up being rubbish - but give him a chance, stop moaning everyone and get behind the team!!!!

Bruce and Rosenior at a decent game at Middlesbrough. Delaney and McAuley seem like the weak links atm.
