Keane Angry at Reporters
Keane Angry at Reporters
Saturday, 3rd Oct 2009 22:35

Town boss Roy Keane slammed reporters for failing to ask him about the controversial penalty awarded to Barnsley after the Tykes had beaten his side 2-1 at Oakwell. Iain Hume missed the spotkick, given for an apparent foul on the Canadian by Tommy Smith.

As Keane left the room at the end of his post-match press conference he rounded on reporters: "You've watch the game and nobody's asked me about the bloody penalty. That about sums you up. Was it a penalty? Does anyone in this room think it was a penalty?”

Keane himself had no doubts: "I couldn't understand what the penalty was given for. None of their players appealed for it and I didn't agree with the freekick against Tommy Smith that led to their second goal.

"He's won the header and then they have taken the kick 10 yards further forward. That said, we should have dealt with it.

“A minute before that, we had one kicked off the line and you go from almost winning it to losing in with the last kick of the game.”

Keane felt his side got something from the game: "It's another disappointing result but we deserved more than we got.

"It wasn't a pretty game but we had just about the better of the chances, barring the penalty. To concede in injury time again after five and a bit minutes is hard to take.

"But we knew coming here today would be difficult with the conditions and Barnsley being on a good run of results."

The Blues boss thought his team came back into it after a slow beginning to the game: "We had a poor start with the goal but we responded well and had some good opportunities.

"That's the way it's going for us at the moment. Instead of winning the game in the last couple of minutes, you go from the disappointment of that to having a double whammy by actually conceding."

The Blues boss seems in no mood to relinquish control, despite the continuing bad results: “I'm still as determined as ever, 100%.

“It's the toughest time I have had in my career, though I had tough times as a player, but we have got to deal with it.

“It's tough at the moment because the players deserve better than what they are getting. We're stuck in a rut, so we have to try and get out of it.”

Keane reacted angrily to a TV reporter asking him if he was going to carry on as Town manager, refusing to dignify what he felt was an insulting question with an answer. When asked how that should be interpreted he glared at the reporter and said: “Take that any way you want.”

Tykes boss Mark Robins was pleased to have achieved his side’s second win in a week: "It's back-to-back wins for the first time since I think Boxing Day last year, so from that point of view its excellent.

"It's a decent return, we've had a decent start. We've been in three weeks now and we're seeing things starting to move. The supporters are behind us, that's really important, and the players are behind us.

"They're putting in the performances now. Sometimes you have to grind it out but if you can do that around teams around you that's an indicator or how you'll perform at the end of the season."

Robins thought his side deserved the win: "I think so, having missed a penalty, hit a crossbar, missed a free shot when it goes in if Ryan Shotton makes good contact.

"They've had one or two chances too where the goalkeeper has made a good save, but the weather didn't help the game.

"It's a great time to a score a goal, there's no chance of a reply. The conditions were shocking, atrocious, and they didn't make for a good game of football and I don't think we got one."

Keane may or may not be a quitter but if he walks out now it will be devastating to his career and I think he knows this.

I don't think that any change now would benefit anybody, it takes alot longer than a dozen games to rebuild a football club. However, i am also not sure how long the Marcus Evans empire can allow themselves to be linked with a club at the bottom of the league for their own publicity purposes. The Steve Maclaren story seems way of the mark, a reporter claiming to know the thoughts of a man that most people don't even know the identity of. If ME was to change manager soon, i think he would be looking at a manager that has previus premiership, championship and international experience that would give high profile publicity and available for management now. has anyone read the Keegan hasn't ruled out a return to management story.

I am not saying this move would be right, in fact the thought of it worries me, but when you look at the facts, it might be worth a punt at the bookies.

I am of the opinion that Keane has the rest of October to sort things out or we seriously need to look at a new man, I would prefer to give Keane til Christmas, but the problem with this is that after 8 weeks of the season we are 5 points from safety, if we give Keane another 8 weeks this will take us til the middle of December & if things haven't improved we could be seriously "cut adrift" at the the bottom of the table.
Any new manager coming in at Christmas would have to work wonders in avoiding the drop if we we're say 10 points from safety, these are truly serious times & I think as supporters we should back our manager, but at the same time we have got to be careful its not blind faith.....

(PS PLEASE PLEASE PLEASE if Keane was to go, do not get Mclaren!!)

Tractorboy - I saw that clip too and I was terrified! The reporter was lucky to escape with his life! RK's answer was very open though and a lot of people may start reading between the lines...

Whether Keane goes or not is not for us to decide but results need to improve quickly or we are down, its that simple. We are now a quarter of the way through the season, without a win, adrift at the bottom and averaging less than half a point a game. We need to average just under 1.5 points a game for the rest of the season (three times better than we are doing right now) if we are to have any chance of staying up. People can say we have been unlucky but out home performances have been dire. Sounds like we have been better away, but still conceding too many goals, particularly at the beginning and the end of games. Improvements seriously needed over the two week break as the next few games will be crucial...

Why are so many making a big deal regards Keane feeling the pressure of course he is but that is to be expected, we aint won yet!! does not mean he is going to walk away, does not mean he cant cope with it, does not mean he cannot turn it around, seems to me some fans can only support a winning team probley the same fans that spent all last season demanding Magilton out!! it does not help. we are all dissapointed with the season so far but lets give the manager a chance not add to his pressure.

To add to Gilsey's list. Crystal Palace were bottom at Christmas and still made it to 6th place and to the play off's.

Nottingham Blue, under Burley town were 22nd in November one season and went on a 26 game unbeaten run, finishing on 87 points and losing out on automatic promotion on goal difference to Bradford

Man utd in turin, 2-0 down after 11 minutes in the 2nd leg of their semi final of champions league. Who popped up with 2 goals to send them to the final, yep our very own 'quitter'. U losers need to stop judging him by your own weak sphincters, the man is a proven winner who does not crumble under pressure. Also we seem to be doing better in away games, thats because the bottle jobs dont attend those games. Visiting managers to portman road must be telling their teams to put us under pressure early doors and unsettle the crowd, then the rest is easy

Obviously it's a worry that we are 5 points from safety! BUT Keane is right to be frustrated. Barnsley did not deserve to win this match and had all the decisions.

Stay behind RK and give him until at least Christmas - if after then we are still bottom, well clearly changes may be required.

I was at the Barnsley game yesterday and what i saw was a very weak defence (suprise!) and no real idea when they got into the final third... until Counago came on that is!

Why is he not starting games? He absolutely must start at home to Swansea, him and Stead up front are our best option, keep walters on the right, it actually worked well in the last 10 mins of the game.

Ok, Pablo won't score bag fulls of goals but his hold up play and vision is exactly what we need right now, a player with a clever football brain.

I don't want to jump on the 'Priskin is s"#t' bandwagon but i must say, he had 2 good touches in the entire game yesterday, one of which nearly led to a goal i feel it is only fair to add, but that is just not good enough over 70 mins of football!

As for the defence, i don't entirely blame Keane for this, we have always suffered in this area and it has not helped that we have not had a consitent back four this season due to injuries and suspensions.

On the positive side, Peters was excelllent against a pacey winger in 'campbell rice' who never got a sniff, and it was good to see David wright back in the frame.

IN KEANO WE MUST TRUST!!!!!!

Pleased to hear that the majority of fans are remaining sensible. We may be losing but at least we're playing well, it's just defensive mistakes yet again.

Can't blame Keane for losing his temper yesterday, I think I would have if I was having the luck he is! Plus the journalists need to be put down a peg or two, especially after the McClaren bulls*** they've printed today!

Looking forward to a new CB and new striker in time for Swansea. In Keane we trust, COYB!

Not looking great so far, BUT the signs of improvement are there, hopefully Keane will bring in the 1 or 2 defenders we are crying out for & it will make the difference.....

We are scoring goals now, so stop giving away the gifts at the other end & the points will come...

Shame on you so called "supporters" never happy unless you're calling for someone's head every day, go bugger off & "support" someone else!

I know we did'n't get a result but I really enjoyed yesterday. Our fans were outstanding, there must have been 1200 competely out singing Barnsley. Our team are improving and the set up before the game in the warm up with the defence working as a unit, the shooting practice, the squad huddles and team huddles before kick off showed a real togetherness. Loads of appreciation by the players to the fans, I really do think we are getting there. There was great backing for the team and the manager all afternoon, I can hardly speak today through all the singing. Lets try and carry this atmosphere and support to Portman Road.

We have had incredible bad luck this season, not least with the way the fixtures have fallen and no doubt mistakes have been made ,but I for one am convinced it will come right, the building blocks are there and when we start winning, I think we'll surprise a few people. The Championship has a history of teams starting poorly but climbing to play off position. I LOVE IPSWICH - COYB

up until yesterday i was convinced Keano was the right man for the job and that 1 win would make all the difference. I must admit that i'm starting to have a few doubts now as i just cant see what else he can do and it still isnt working. I do hope i'm wrong as another change of manager is the last thing we need.
Good to see most comments on here are still positive and that most people seem to still be backing Keano and hope our fortunes change soon.

Couldn't agree more with both Kipper and Stowmarkettractor great comments we need more like minded fans to get together and show Keane and the lads we are committed to supporting them 100% - I too was at Barnsley today and never felt so proud to be a town fan signing the team off, it just wasn't our day simple as that with more positives to take on board, it will come and I believe it will be Swansea in two weeks that feel for the first team what its like to loose to Keanes Blue & White Army. I know for the Portman Road faithfull its hard to cheer on a team that haven't been at their best but with strengthened defence (I expect to have within the international window) then they will see that we can play some great attacking football and score goals - earlier in the season I was more concerned when we were conceding so many while not scoring, now we're scoring and having that solid defence will make all the difference. So I ask all those fans who have the belief and faith in Keane and the team get behind the lads on October 17th we have run of games we can win lets start as we mean to go on - UNITED AS A TEAM, UNITED AS SUPPORTERS, UNITED AS A CLUB - Bad Boy Roy's Barmy Army!

What the team really needs now is for everyone, supporters included, to get right behind them. The backing yesterday as others have already commented was superb. Changing the manager now would only cause more unrest and there is no guarantee that a new man would have any more success. I understand the Curbishley comments but as West ham fans will tell you, be careful what you wish for. We, the fans, have the chance against Swansea and Watford to make a real difference by backing the team and manager 100%. Lets all do our bit to help turn things round.
