Clegg: Town Being Run Efficiently
Clegg: Town Being Run Efficiently
Thursday, 5th Nov 2009 15:25

Chief executive Simon Clegg says Town's operating loss of operating loss of £10 million in the year to June 2009 doesn't mean that the club isn't being run efficiently. Clegg was speaking to TWTD after yesterday’s Supporters Club AGM.

Clegg says the loss is the result of the Marcus Evans's ongoing investment in the squad: “We have invested in the playing stock. Those results are for the last financial year and it’s recognised that Jim was given the opportunity to bring in a lot of new players and the player wage bill increased substantially.

“But we are running this club on a tight financial model and are lucky to have the support of Marcus Evans to ensure that despite that tight financial model, we can continue to invest in the playing stock to deliver the results we’re after.

“The club continues to be beholden to the financial support Marcus Evans is giving and Marcus has made it very clear that he’s committed for the long-term.”

Meanwhile, also speaking at last night’s Supporters Club AGM, manager Roy Keane dismissed suggestions that Owen Garvan is completely out of the first team picture.

Keane says the Irish U21 skipper will get his chance again if he impresses in training and in the reserves: “Owen Garvan hasn’t done enough to get in my first team at this moment in time.

“He played in the reserves at Watford the other day and didn’t do enough to get himself in my first team for next weekend.”

"we can continue to invest in the playing stock to deliver the results we're after"

Wonder who we'll get in january? No point in speculation, could be an interesting month though. Surely we'll offload some "deadwood".

Our whole squad is deadwood, bar maybe Leadbitter and Walters.

We have some decent players - mainly the recent RK signings.

I have not been to a game since Newcatle, (lost the will) but have read alot of positive comments on this site in particular after the watford game, but my point is that endevour, determination and effort etc do not win football matches, its as simple as, score goals and don't concead. I do not think the corner has been turned the next 3-4 will give a picture of how the season will pan out.

Shame we cant sell Martin on! I am very impressed with the way the club is being run since Keane & Clegg have both come in.

We seem to not just be content with being a football club any more and more aiming to be a global brand say like Man Utd. Not saying we will ever be that big, but the club can still bring lots of money through music concerts etc to help the club which I am sure we will see a few of now with Marcus Evans in charge & his contacts.

It is very exciting times for Ipswich at the moment and long may it last. Just got 50/1 odds for Ipswich to be promoted, ever the optimist!

I haven't seen much evidence of a 'well run ' since KEANE and CLEGG took over club I presume you mean off the pitch
To be fair to all let use see the situation at XMAS
Like everyone on this board I want to Keane to succeed , I just haven't seen anything yet from him that is impressive

I've been impressed with Clegg but wish he wouldn't refer to players as "stock", it makes them sound less than human. Why he can't say we've invested in "new players" is beyond me, particularly when you keep talking about football being a people business.

I wonder if the word don't is miising from Cleggy's comment. We seem to have been talking to faye for ages, it is nor movig quickly at all.

I like Keanes honesty in his interviews. Particularly the comment about Garvan. I know several posts on this site say he should be in the side but if the player is not performing then he doesn't deserve to be in the side. Past performances don't count, what you need is a player that will roll his sleeves up and work at it. This goes for those in the first team also.

I was surprised to hear RK stands back a bit from the training sessions, perhaps he should get stuck in. There again we could then have an injury crisis on our hands.

Heres to 3 points Saturday

Some of the signings have not helped but at least the club is still running good :)

I totally concur with the comment above about "playing stock" - a horrible and quite insulting way to describe your co-workers.

Maybe Clegg should have driven straight past Portman Road, continued up the A14 and applied for a PR job at the National Stud.

Why do people always strive for stupid and pretentious ways to describe basic concepts?

Perhaps he would be better off thinking of a clever-assed way of saying "still bottom of the league".

I would imagine it would go something like: "the owner, manager and I, plus the whole ITFC family are all currently completely focused on short-term team player asset consolidation with a view to realising our longer-term mission of achieving closer peer parity in each aspect of continuing comparative assessment."

And we all thought Sheepy could talk...
