Keane: Disallowed Goal Was Turning Point
Keane: Disallowed Goal Was Turning Point
Tuesday, 8th Dec 2009 23:35

Boss Roy Keane felt referee Andy Hall’s decision to disallow Stern John’s goal at the end of the first half was a turning point in Tuesday's 0-0 draw with Peterborough. The Blues manager thought the goal should have stood rather than being ruled out for an apparent push on Posh full-back Scott Griffiths.

Keane said: "Saying it was harsh would be an understatement and it was the turning point in the game.

"I always judge the reaction of both sets of players, but the one person who thought it was a foul was the referee.

"I don't think we played that well but we had some good chances. The fact we didn't take them was very frustrating and I'm getting fed up of using that word.

"We've got to start putting the ball in the back of the net and I don't just mean my strikers - anyone.

“Peterborough put their bodies on the line but it's surprising me how much trouble we're having scoring goals.

"I need my players to step up to the plate and take a sniff of a chance. Instead of that, we always seemed to be on our heels.

"We played too many long balls in the second half. I don't know why because we don't encourage the players to do that, but maybe it was a sign of us getting edgy.

"We overcomplicated it at times as well, when you are looking at players to have a shot when they are in a good position.

"It's very frustrating. The only positive is that we kept another clean sheet. Our defensive record is outstanding at the moment and if we had turned any ratio of chances into goals we would be so much better off in the table."

New Peterborough boss Mark Cooper was pleased with his side’s defensive display: "It was a very resolute performance.

"On Saturday we conceded a couple of needless goals but tonight the goalkeeper and centre-halves were outstanding. They had to deal with a lot of balls into the area but they won nearly every header.

"When they didn't they won the second ball that bounced on the edge of the box. I was very pleased defensively and, being greedy, we could have nicked it at the end.

"When you're in the position we're in and you come to a place like this, with the players they've got, you have to respect that.

"You can't go all-out attack. We tried to defend properly and play a bit on the counter-attack. That's three games unbeaten now and we have to build on this.

"We mustn't think we can just turn up and it'll happen for us at Coventry on Saturday, just because we've had some good performances. We've got to show the same work-rate and desire."

DrJekyll: there are always morons in the crowd. I remember the Scowcroft hate a few years back. I was next to a guy at the Swindon away game (when we won 6-0/6-1 - memory's not what it was) and he abused Scowie for every touch - even if it was perfectly OK.

It was pathetic, but some people don't really have an opinion of their own and pick up on press, comments etc and just go with it. Hence they abuse regardless of performance.

There certainly wasn't anything like you describe where I was in Chruchmans so it seems you were unlucky.

But the atmosphere wasn't the best, I agree.

If we manage to get a few wins under our belt I'm sure it'll all change.

Dobbie71 - I like the cut of your posts on here, sir - rationally optimistic, not hopelessly rose-tinted. That's how we should support a club. As for classic names my favourites have always been Elvis Hammond and Dixon Etuhu - both budgies for a while of course - but then they've had a rash of pseudo-aristocratic names such as Spencer Prior and so on. And come on - the headmasterly Stern John (Or does he sound like a doorman?) isn't bad either...

Now then - played well over all last night - 18 chances I believe. But if we don't start scoring we 'll be relegated - that's an indisputable fact. So let's ditch Counago, Stead and Priskin for the time being and get a proven scorer in in Jan.

salforduniblue - true... but only when it suited him. If he was off his game it was easy to see from minute one. Don't get me wrong, he was superb at his ebst, but he fluctuated dramitically!

I love Ipswich Town Football Club, have for over 40 years and remember the good days when we punched above our weight, played attractive football & were respected by many. I don't however support a manager who has us currently in a relegation place, 2 wins all season & can't believe how many people on here think Roy keane's doing a good job!!
Again last night we failed to score against the bottom side & damn near lost all 3 points at the death (again). There has been an improvement on the defensive displays since the start of the season (we'd be bottom if there hadn't) but that's about it, were a joke in the final third but it goes deeper than that, some of the service & crosses our strikers get are diabolical.
I say again, even though I think RK is an ignorant bully boy, I hope he turns the team around, I'll be the first person to admit I was wrong, but do you really think so....honestly...??
Since we sold out to Marcus Evans nothing seems to have gone right, I hope our fortunes change soon.
Cue whinging Pro Keaner's!

devontractorboy - Reminiscing on past glories is all well and good but to be honest right now I don't give a stuff about the comparison between the football we're playing now and the football we played under Ramsey, Robson, Burley et al, I'm more concerned with THIS SEASON and the improvement from what I believe is our lowest point this season and that is the Newcastle game, and there has been improvement. That by no means at all means that I am happy with the current predicament, nor does it mean that I didn't sit in the SBR stand tearing my hair out at our lack of ability to finish in front of Peterborough's goal last night, but what it does mean is that I acknowledge after some serious early clangers in his tenure, Keane is at the very least fixing them. Time to fix those mistakes has to be given. Who do you suggest would replace him? I can't see any manager of better talent out there that's available or would be willing to come to us considering the position we are in. You mention the glory days but you fail to mention that we would not have had those wonderful times under Sir Bobby if Mr John had listened to the fans who wanted him out. I'm not saying that Keane will replicate that success (the game is far too different for that to happen anyway), and if it does go wrong I'll admit I was wrong, but what I am saying is have just a little more patience.

We need goals......

Ideye Brown 12 goals in 17 apps so far this season in Swiss Super League

21 years old... got potential!

Nigerian International, 10 apps for U 20'S (2 Goals), 3 apps for U23'S (1 Goal)

Not well known which could be to our advantage

Worth a look!

matt-the-blue Thank you for your condsidered reply, I respect your patience, mines wearing thin, Robson turned our fortunes around in 8 games and Keanes had 20! In reality I understand that an old fart such as myself will look back to the good old days and see a very different picture, but it was the place of my birth and that picture that made me care as much as I do today.
What worries me is a 'what if' & what if Keane does not turn things around, the transfer window has gone and we're stuck with a relegation battle. For what it's worth I don't think we'll be relegated, but neither do I share the optimism that we will reach the play offs!
Anyway thanks for an intelligent and considered reply, you are a breath of fresh air compared to some on this site.

devontractorboy - My pleasure, always nice to have an intelligent debate. :) For what it's worth I agree with you that the play-offs this season is far too optimistic. This season I'll settle for a solid lower mid-table finish with a view to build a team that'll be a force in 10/11 under whoever's in charge by then, Keano or otherwise. :)

excuses keane, as i was just starting to get behind keane were still deep in the same bother we were in at the start of the season, the disallowed goal was not a turning point the team still had another 60 or so minuites to score and before or after that we created very little, people keep saying were gunna turn it around, we have got the defence sorted but when your in the position were in drawing 0-0 to a team who are rock bottom it isnt good, priskin was a joke an awful signing and jim magilton's was much better then the team keane has now. something needs changing and we need to start winning before its to late!

and i know we have got to have patience but he has had long enough and although there has been improvements we find ourselfes in a lot of bother especially when we were 4th favourites to get promoted! and i was in the robson stand and can you blame the fans booing the team after the match, it was an appouling result. Keane just isn't the right man for this job and it dosent take this long for a team to gell and magilton done a much better job then keane is doing now we was never in this position.

What good can possibly come from booing the team? While i agree the result was dissapointing it was in no way appalling. Do u really think the performance was appalling? Booing the team with another home fixture coming up several days later is, in my opinion, rank stupidity. How many managers do we have to go through before we take a good look at ourselves and how our behaviour is affecting things. Is it a coincidence that in 8 playoffs we only managed to get to the final once? Or could it have something to do with the fact that our crowd cannot cope with the tension whenever they feel we have to get a result? How many visiting fans mock us with 'shall we sing a song for you' ?
