Boss Roy Keane says Tommy Smith and Liam Trotter have been sent out on loan to get games under their belts. Smith became the latest Town player to join Brentford on Thursday, while Trotter returned to Millwall for a second loan spell earlier in the week.

Keane said: “It was a no-brainer Tommy and Liam Trotter going out on loan. They both need to play games and they’ve not being doing that lately.

“Brentford wanted a left-sided centre-half and with Pim coming back, he fitted the bill. They are both at clubs for a month and we’ll see how it goes from there.”

Meanwhile, Keane says he wants new keeper Brian Murphy to play for the reserves before he makes his first team bow: “He’ll be in the squad for the weekend if we get the international clearance in time and that should happen.

“We’d like him to play a couple of reserve team games first though before we throw him in at first team level.”

I have to admit that I have been somewhat sceptical of RK's record so far, but it would seem that the team has turned a corner and is currently enjoying a reasonable run, so any claim that he should be moved on now just looks a bit silly really. Both Smith and Trotter will gain much more from these loans than they would playing in the reserves and will come back better for the experience.
