Smith Happy to Stay With Brentford
Smith Happy to Stay With Brentford

Central defender Tommy Smith says he would be happy to stay on loan with Brentford until the end of the season if he isn’t in Town’s first team. The 19-year-old, who is aiming to seal a place in New Zealand’s World Cup squad for South Africa, joined the Bees for a month earlier in January.

Smith said: “I'm just happy to be playing games. If I play well I might get back into the Ipswich first team. But if not, then I'd be happy to stay until the end of the season."

This Saturday Brentford face Norwich City at Carrow Road with Smith unsure of the welcome awaiting him: "I've played against them plenty of times at youth and reserve level but never at their place. They're really fierce contests, and the rivalry's massive.

"I'm not too sure what kind of reception to expect. I was injured when we played against them last season, so I doubt they'd have even heard of me!"

Smith has made one appearance for the Bees so far, the Blues having refused permission for him to play in the FA Cup defeat to Doncaster on Tuesday.

Probably a good idea - he wants to go to the World Cup and is certainly not gonna push Delaney/McAuley while we are playing so well. Any injury will let in Bruce first off.

I think its a good idea, especially with the world cup. And I totally agree with the Billy Whizz. The form delany and mac are in he would be a bench warmer. I think big things are on the horizon for this lad and Ipswich can take him there. If he makes the world cup, the experience it will give him will be invaluable and he will have a huge development to his game that other players his age won't get.

Good luck tommy

Hope you have a blinder tomorrow Tommy, spend a solid, productive few months at Brentford and come back next year to challenge for a first team place.
