Johnson Welsh Again?
Johnson Welsh Again?
Friday, 5th Nov 1999 14:11

The increasingly bizarre David Johnson international saga continues apace with Wales claiming that he is available for selection for the four UK teams after all. Yesterday it seemed that his mother's Englishness meant that he could only play for England and Jamaica, however the Welsh FA, Mark Hughes and most importantly FIFA say otherwise: Wales chief executive David Collins said last night "Under our interpretation of the laws, we believe Johnson is still eligible to play for us.". FIFA said "Under our rules, he is available for any of the British countries. The fact that he cannot play for Scotland is their decision, not ours. There is nothing to stop him playing for Wales."

And it seems that Mark Hughes is ready to forgive Johnson running off to Craig Brown. Brown doesn't seem at all embarrassed about the situation despite criticism of the whole debacle in the Scottish press. He said "I am disappointed and so is the player, but I do not see it as an embarrassment. In fact, I am glad the SFA's procedure uncovered this information."

More soon we expect. Anyone else becoming weary of all this?
