Town Linked With Move for Sunderland Keeper
Town Linked With Move for Sunderland Keeper
Wednesday, 21st Jul 2010 15:50

Town are reported to have made an offer to Sunderland for Hungarian international keeper Marton Fulop. TWTD first reported the Blues’ interest in the 27-year-old in May.

Town are now said to have tabled a £1 million bid for Fulop, who has a year left on his Sunderland contact. The keeper is said to be weighing up his options with other clubs also likely to be targeting him.

Fulop, an international team-mate and close friend of Tamás Priskin, started his career with MTK Hungaria during which time he went on loan to Elöre and Siófok, also in his homeland.

After a three-day trial in July 2004, the 6ft 5in tall keeper joined Spurs. In 2004/05 he spent time on loan at Chesterfield, then the following season moved on to Coventry on a similar basis.

In November 2006 he joined Sunderland, making his move to the Stadium of Light a permanent one in the following January for a fee of £900,000.

Fulop, who has won 21 Hungarian caps, moved on loan to Leicester in August 2007 and was expected to stay with the Foxes until the end of the season. However, after the clubs failed to agree a fee for his permanent move to the Walkers Stadium in the following January — Leicester offered £1 million, Sunderland wanted £3 million — he returned to Wearside.

In February 2008 he briefly joined Stoke on loan but was recalled after four days to cover an injury at Sunderland, however, the Potters and Black Cats agreed a £3 million fee that summer but the move eventually broke down.

Last season Fulop made only 14 appearances for the Black Cats with Craig Gordon currently the first choice and Trevor Carson the regular sub. More recently Belgian U21 international Simon Mignolet has also moved to the Stadium of Light.

Towards the end of the campaign Fulop joined Manchester City on an emergency loan basis as cover for the injured Shay Given, but his move to Eastlands was never expected to stretch beyond the final games of the Premier League season.

Blues boss Roy Keane has stated that he likes to have three keepers in his squad and with Richard Wright departing in the summer will want an additional glovesman to compete with Brian Murphy and Arran Lee-Barrett.

I'm not usually one to comment on speculative stories, but I'm sorry to say we can almost guarantee this one isn't paper talk.

So two things occur to me really. Firstly, with goalkeeping far from the cause of last year's farce, three keepers already available and Brian Murphy part of a small and ever-decreasing of RK's moves that were actually wise, surely we don't need to be spending any of a seemingly very precious budget on another keeper. Secondly, if a fellow countryman might help to settle Priskin down, how come Akos Buszaky didn't help to reduce his crapness at QPR? If this logic plays any part in this decision then we're just throwing good money after bad.

Oh and thirdly RK, knock on Sunderland's door all you like, if it's for Kenwyne Jones.

Cant see the problem with this one. we need a keeper having allowed richard wright to move on. Keane has always said he wants three keepers at the club to create competition for places. £1m doesnt seem an unreasonable price for fulop, the only stumbling block, again, will be wages.

Things are starting to move in terms of transfers finally, i think garvan and bruce could easily be on there way soon and it will be interesting to see how swansea's links with priskin play out, for the right price, i think we would sell.

Keane has brought in hourihane from sunderland, a quiet signing of a under 19 international that could prove to be as astute as that of colback. fingers crossed.

being linked with steve finnan is more good news, a quality pro with bags of experience.

if one or two players can be moved on soon then i think keanes hands wiont be tied by the need to balance the books so much. then, i think we will see the four or five targeted arrive, of course, a striker being the main prioirty, two if priskin leaves.

martin fulop, steve finnan, hourihane and a quality but costly striker, not bad work for a summers rebuilding. even allows for some of the transfer listed 8 to have one last chance to prove themselves to keane. i dont expect all to go. perhaps a centre back is needed as cover for delaney.

furthermore, i couldnt care less if they were ex sunderland or irish, alot of these players are seasoned pros with bags of experience and definitley of a higher calibre then we have been able to sign in the past.

if we start the season with these players added to the squad and please, please, let the striker be chopra, then we could be on for a strong season. obviously we have to hit the ground running because of the lost time that was last season. this makes promotion and the playoffs a unconvincing target but we will give ourselves a fighting chance if we can do the right deals in the transfer market.

Just checked all these posts and can't believe that nobody has spotted the one flaw in this story.

Gordon is out injured and Bruce has already been quoted as saying that he trusts Fulop to stand in for him , as he did last season.

End of.

"Why" is my question! I agree he may be a good keeper but we are desperate to fix the striking force, we have Delaney injured so a sentre half will be welcomed too. I mean if we had tons of money to spent let us get Fulop but it seems we are not in that position right now so better fix the critical areas first and if we had money left to spent I certainly would welcome Fulop.

The negative comments about this being a Sunderland reserve team is way off the mark. In actual fact we have signed TWO permanent players from Sunderland. Murphy, Healy and Colback were only on LOAN and have gone back. They served a purpose and on the whole were decent signings. It should also be noted that Leadbitter is a very good player. So why people are moaning is beyond me.

Still, regardless of where Fullop comes from, it does seem a little odd that we are targeting a keeper. There is no doubt that he is a very good keeper, but surely a right back, creative midfielder and striker are a higher priority? Then we need cover for Delaney - possibly on a loan.

Then again, how accurate is this rumour? I thought Clegg was away from the club, so surely no movements are imminent, let alone bids made?

I think keane must once have received an advert from sunderland advertising their players but didn't get to the small print at the bottom where it said 'other football clubs are available'.
Sick of this now! Go rot please

WTF Keane? I've supported u but £1 mill for a keeper when we already have a good one? Why! What about if o Connor or peters get injured or why not get some better fall backs! If we don't have the money don't waste it in the wrong areas!

1) Do we need a keeper ?
2) If so, is this really our most pressing need ?
3) Does Keane only have the Sunderland 'phone number
4) £1m ...........! ?

what a laughing stock of a club we have become... we have gone from ( in my opinion ) a well respected club, well liked by everyone ( scum excluded ) to, lets face it a club that most would like to see fail...WHY?????? Roy Keane has done more damage to this club in 2 years than even the most viscous Norwich supporter could dream to do in 10..
It really is time to change but who is the most stuborn here, Keane for not facing facts that he cannot manage a football team ( as a player he was one of my idols ) or is it Marcus Evans for not standing up and admitting that he made a mistake... How long do we let this go on for....Dropping attendances, lack of atmosphere ( due partly to the lack of excitement on the pitch). Its time for change..
Chasing keepers, Letting great young prospects leave, surrounding our club in ex black cats, familar faces..when is this merry go round gonna stop... i feel sick and its time to get off.....
PS.Looks like Bramble is going to Sunderland so Look out for The TWTD welcome back Titus Teeshirts available in all sizes ( up 2 8XL ) available from January 2011....

We are a discrace nobody wants to play for us or keane at end of season was promised this time around that our squad would be assembled early preseason what load of crap. you would think with keanes standing in the game everyone would love to play for him! There is something seriously wrong Marcus Evans, Simon Clegg sort it out now if you want this brilliant club where we belong thats playing attractive one touch on the floor quick football not this one up front hoof it to walters rubbish.
We need a smaller more quality squad and this is it
Goalkeepers B Murphy, Lee-Barrett, Fullop(loan)
Defenders Mcaulay, Delaney, Finnan (on a free) Lee naylor or mattock on loan, tommy smith, peters, oconnor, Eastman
Midfielders Civeli, Leadbitter, Norris, Nicky Butt (on a free) Hyam, Edwards, Martin, Kieran dyer, Ambrose
Strikers Wickham, jason Roberts Blackburn, jay simpson (loan) Hooper (scunthorpe) Stead
Out Bruce, Garven, Healey, Quinn, Priskin, Lisbie, Walters, counago
25 man squad with few youngsters waiting in wings perfect with pace and quality in there and experience. Do it Keane now

Ipswich 24- That would be a very good side probably challenging for the title! But lets be honest thats way above are dreams. As is stands with are current team will we be challenging for the play-offs this season?............. So much work to do a leaving it all at the last minute but thats not all keane's fault that is very poor management from are owner and executive. SORT OUT ARE CLUB BEFORE U FCUK IT UP EVEN MORE.

The fact is that our squad probably is capable of challenging for the play-offs (Blackpool managed it after all) but only with the right man in charge....

As for our transfer failings this year. RK has come out and essentially criticised Clegg and ME for failing to sign the two players he'd identified. Two? Is that all? I doubt many chairman succeed in getting their manager's first choices - especially if they are unlikely signings like Chopra (why would he take a further step down to come to us?). Fact is, RK seems to have zero scouting network and zero contacts in the game (which is why the Sunderland thing is becoming a farce. Sure it's to be expected he'll go there occasionally, especially for loan signings, but it's becoming a joke. And the only time he's stretched himself wa for Priskin. Well, that worked well!).

He should have a dossier of at least 10-15 players identified to fill the 5 places he said he wanted. Supposedly he'd identified the players he wanted, so I'm hoping the other three are in the process of being signed!

Anyway, enough ranting. I'm still hopeful that this season will be less painful than the last. And who knows, maybe RK will be forced to play a settled team and therefore get the best out of the team. Stranger things have happened.

jason0999 - come on Jason0999 you have to admit that Sunderland seems to be the only point of interest in terms of Keane when looking at players - maybe someone should tell him he left there some time back, and is still here (unfortunately).
But then again, they are the only club that seem to have players who are interested in coming here these days. I can't remotely think of a single reason why !!!! - everyone's allowed one white lie, even I am.

Never mind - we have what we have, so let's press on and HOPE for a good season - and Mr Keane proves us wrong, and becomes a manager after all.
Can't be worse than last season - or can it ??????

Brad_C_ITFC added 22:53 - Jul 21
It's not that he's a bad keeper it's just that we need to strenghen in so many other areas that I just think it's a waste. We still need another striker but Keano is just messing about. I want Connor up there with a Chopra, Hooper whatever and Walters in his better right side of midfield. I think Keano maybe making excuses to save himself, the truth is no one wants to play under him, nothing else. Sorry for the rant but just don't trust this fool!

The Fulop transfer is more likely to surface due to the player wanting options wheras the other ongoing transfers are more likely to be kept quiet.
